  • [01] House Plenary ratifies Cyprus - Israel energy agreement

    The House plenary has ratified an agreement between the Republic of Cyprus and Israel on cooperation in the fields of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency.

    The agreement was signed in Nicosia on November 3 2011 and according to a representative of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism it has also been ratified by the state of Israel.

    Israel has set up a team to act as liaison with Cyprus on the basis of the agreement.

    The aim of the agreement is the cooperation of the competent authorities of Cyprus and Israel through an exchange of knowledge and expertise concerning the installment and functioning of renewable energy sources systems as well as the drafting and management of grants and subsidy schemes in the field of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency.

    [02] Cyprus trade balance falls in first eight months of 2012, Eurostat says

    Cyprus' trade balance fell in the first eight months of 2012, Eurostat data published on Friday show.

    Cyprus' trade deficit recorded a decrease of 400 million euro (2.9%) on an annual basis between January and August 2012.

    The total export values of Cyprus goods between January and August this year came to 900 million euro, recording an increase of 5% in relation to the same period of last year. Imports decreased by 8% reaching 3.9 billion euro.

    [03] A Cyprus cultural event took place in Stockholm

    The work of the Swedish Archeological Mission in Cyprus as a basic instrument in the efforts of enhancing relations between Sweden and Cyprus, was praised by Cyprus Ambassador in Stockholm George Shiakallis.

    The Ambassador was addressing yesterday a cultural event for Cyprus antiquities hosted in the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of EU.

    Shiakallis also praised the contribution of the Mediterranean Museum in Stockholm in the promotion of the culture and history of Cyprus through its vast Cypriot collection of antiquities.

    [04] Cyprus Women's Coop Bank wins European business award

    The winners of the 6th European Enterprise Promotion Awards were announced at the Awards ceremony during the SME Assembly on Thursday, in Cyprus.

    According to a press release issued here today, the Women's Cooperative Bank, which was created by women entrepreneurs aims to open up access to funding.

    Since the project started, women's entrepreneurship has increased in Cyprus overall from 12% in 2001, to 28% today.

    [05] Cyprus will face the new crossroads with realism, President says

    Cyprus will face the new crossroads ahead of it decisively, assertively and with realism, President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has said.

    Addressing an event to mark 70 years since the establishment of a Cultural Association in Egkomi, Nicosia, President Christofias spoke of the global crisis which has led millions to unemployment, poverty and marginalization.

    Europe, he noted, is at the core of this crisis which means that even economies which were once strong are now faced with big problems.

    [06] Marginal decline in health spending in Cyprus despite financial crisis

    According to the Health At a Glance edition of the OECD, health spending pet capita declined by 0.2% whereas the average annual increase in expenditure in the period of 2000-2009 stood at 2.7%.

    In a total of 24 countries, the average annual per capita health expenditure declined by 0.6%. The biggest annual decline in 2010 was registered in Ireland with 7.9% followed by Estonia with 7.3% and Greece with 6.9%
