  • [01] Defence Minister: Limassol Declaration a milestone for maritime

The Limassol Declaration will serve as a milestone for the future EU maritime policy, Cyprus' Defence Minister Demetris Eliades has said.

Eliades was addressing on Monday afternoon a High Level Seminar on Maritime Security, which takes place Monday and Tuesday, in Larnaca.

According to EU Commission data, he said, EU ‘blue growth' represents 5.4 million jobs, as well as an added value of slightly less than 500 billion euro per year, he said.

[02] UN-led talks crumbled due to Turkish stance, says President

UN-led talks for a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem reached a stalemate due to the refusal of the Turkish Cypriot side to resume negotiations after the Cypriot government assumed the EU rotating Presidency, President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has said.

"Unfortunately, the talks between the two communities under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General reached a stalemate as result of the refusal of the Turkish Cypriot leadership to resume the negotiations using the assumption of the EU Presidency by Cyprus as a pretext," Christofias said addressing an event organized by the Union of Cypriot living in Northern Greece.

In his remarks, Christofias said that "essentially Dervis Eroglu, the Turkish Cypriot leader has withdrawn from the negotiations, culminating in this way a tactic of continuous undermining of the talks via the nullification of all those achieved with Mr Talat, when he was in the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot community."

[03] Government pledges to continue support of the work of CMP

Minister of Justice and Public Order Loucas Louca pledged that the government will continue to support the work of the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP).

Louca was addressing a memorial in Nicosia in honour of 40 Greek Cypriot soldiers who are missing since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied Cyprus' northern third.

The government renews its commitments to all relatives of missing persons of Cyprus that it will continue to demand a full investigation of what happened to them, he noted.

[04] 2013 will be difficult as regards tourist arrivals from Britain

The year 2013 will be a difficult year as regards the arrivals of British tourists to Cyprus, due to the ongoing economic crisis and the revision of the British Tourist Operators' programmes.

This has been ascertained during contacts held in London by a Cypriot delegation, headed by Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Neoklis Sylikiotis and Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) Chairman Alekos Orountiotis.

The delegation paid a visit to London in the framework of the tourist exhibition ‘World Travel Market'.
