  • [01] Commerce Minister: 2012 a great year for Cyprus tourism

The year 2012 is evolving into a great year for tourism in Cyprus, Commerce Minister Neoklis Sylikiotis said, while expressing his cautious optimism that tourist arrivals from Great Britain will improve slightly in 2013, compared to this year.

Sylikiotis visited the "World Travel Market" tourism fair, in London, and had a series of separate meetings with representatives from the biggest tour operators, as well as major airlines operating flights to Cyprus, discussing with them ways to increase British tourist flow.

Cyprus is participating at the "World Travel Market" fair with a Cyprus Tourism Organisation pavilion, while representatives from other organisations and Cypriot tourism industry stakeholders are also present.

[02] Commissioner Hahn: Decision on MFF needed urgently to recover from crisis

If Europe would like to recover as quickly as possible, we need a quick decision about the budget for the next financial perspective (MFF) because this will allow many private investors all over Europe to decide about their investments in the next few years, EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn told a press conference, held Tuesday in the framework of the Informal Meeting of EU Ministers for Cohesion Policy.

The Informal Meeting was chaired by Cyprus Deputy Minister for European Affairs, who is also responsible for Cohesion Policy, Andreas Mavroyiannis.

The effectiveness and the governance of cohesion policy at the EU level was at the centre of discussions during this last Informal Ministerial meeting under the Cyprus Presidency, which took place in Nicosia. During the morning session, Member States expressed their positions on the basis of a Presidency paper, entitled ‘Improving the Effectiveness and Added Value of Cohesion Policy'. Ways to improve governance of cohesion policy are considered to be a successful recipe for the new programming period. This issue was discussed during lunch, on the basis of a Presidency non-paper.

[03] Ten flights affected by Air Traffic Controllers' strike in Greece

Ten flights, five departures and five arrivals, to and from the airports of Cyprus (Larnaca and Paphos) were affected by Tuesday's three-hour strike by Air Traffic Controllers in Greece.

The affected flights concerned the destinations of th

e Greek airports in Athens, Thessaloniki and Patras.

[04] Cohesion policy the focus of the EU Informal Meeting in Nicosia

The cohesion policy is an important priority for Cyprus' EU Presidency and a practical manifestation of solidarity, Andreas Mavroyiannis, Deputy Minister for European Affairs has stressed in a statement prior to the beginning of the Informal Ministerial meeting in Nicosia, "Cyprus for the Cohesion policy".

According to an official announcement, Mavroyiannis noted that this is the last Informal Meeting held in Cyprus, expressing confidence that as the end of the Cyprus EU Presidency is approaching, all of the Informal Ministerial meetings "have been particularly successful".

The meeting concerns issues related to the Effectiveness and Governance of the Cohesion policy in the new programming period 2014-2020, he added. The morning session discussion focused on improving the effectiveness of the cohesion policy, ensuring quality of spending and European added value, based on a Presidency issues paper. The working lunch will be devoted to governance of the cohesion policy at EU level, based on the non paper prepared by the Cyprus President, Mavroyiannis explained in his doorstep statement.

[05] Cyprus EU Presidency conference on Police and Customs Cooperation

Ways to further develop police and customs cooperation in the EU will be discussed at a conference organized in Brussels by the Cyprus EU Presidency in collaboration with the European Commission.

The two-day conference will examine the possibility of the use of Europol's SIENA channel at the centers for police and customs cooperation, in order to improve the exchange of information between these centers and national institutions.

The conference will also emphasize the importance of the cooperation between departments within the police and customs cooperation centers for a better law enforcement during operations in border areas.
