More than 300 participants and 80 keynote speakers from around Europe will take part in two conferences on research, innovation and technology that are organized in the context of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU.

The agenda of the two conferences was presented on Thursday during a press conference at the offices of the Planning Bureau in Nicosia.

The first conference titled " European Institute of Innovation (EIT) and Technology Stakeholders Conference -Addressing Societal Challenges" is taking place 8-9 November in the coastal city of Larnaka. [02] Cohesion policy at the spotlight of last EU Informal Meeting in Nicosia

The cohesion policy is an important priority for Cyprus' EU Presidency and a practical manifestation of solidarity, Andreas Mavroyiannis, Deputy Minister for European Affairs has stressed on Tuesday in a statement prior to the beginning of the Informal Ministerial meeting in Nicosia, "Cyprus for the Cohesion policy".

According to an official announcement, Mavroyiannis noted that this is the last Informal Meeting held in Cyprus, expressing confidence that as the end of the Cyprus EU Presidency is approaching, all of the Informal Ministerial meetings "have been particularly successful".

Today's meeting concerns issues related to the Effectiveness and Governance of the Cohesion policy in the new programming period 2014-2020, he added. The morning session discussion focused on improving the effectiveness of the cohesion policy, ensuring quality of spending and European added value, based on a Presidency issues paper. The working lunch will be devoted to governance of the cohesion policy at EU level, based on the non paper prepared by the Cyprus President, Mavroyiannis explained in his doorstep statement.

[03] Commissioner to call for support of proposals on structural funds

EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn will attend the Informal Meeting of Ministers for Cohesion Policy, which takes place Tuesday in Nicosia.

European Commission Spokeswoman Pia Hansen told journalists Monday that the Commissioner will urge EU Ministers with responsibility for cohesion policy to show their strong commitment to the better spending agenda when it comes to cohesion funds.

Commissioner Hahn will call on the 27 Ministers to support the Commission proposals for more focused and strategic use of structural funds in the context of a realistic budget for the next spending period.

[04] Pierre-Yves Cousteau addresses event organized to pay tribute to his father

The generation of today as well as previous generations created many problems to the environment and young people have to use every means and tool they can get if they want to have any chance of solving these problems, Pierre-Yves Cousteau, oceanographer, President of Cousteau Divers and son of great researcher who studied the sea and all forms of life in water Jacques-Yves Cousteau has said.

Cousteau, who was speaking Monday during an event organized as part of the International Sea Festival Nautilus by the Evagoras & Kathleen Lanitis Foundation, in collaboration with the Oceanographic Center of the University of Cyprus and the ‘Rencontres de la Terre', to pay tribute to Jacques-Yves Cousteau, noted that with his work his father inspired millions of people throughout the world.

Addressing the students who attended the event, he said that "you will need all the tools you can get, you will need all the education you can get about the environment if you want to have any chance of fixing these problems."

[05] Nicosia responds to Ankara's threats regarding offshore drilling

The Republic of Cyprus has the sovereign and inalienable right to explore and exploit its natural resources in its own exclusive economic zone, a right supported by the European Union and a large number of foreign states, the Foreign Ministry stressed on Sunday, in response to Turkey's attempts to threaten and create tension in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Replying to a communiqué issued by the Turkish Foreign Ministry on Saturday, the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Cyprus states that this behavior has been already condemned by the EU and foreign governments.

Cyprus and its people will reap the benefits of natural gas and oil exploration, the government has reiterated, pointing out that President Demetris Christofias has made it abundantly clear that the Turkish Cypriots will enjoy benefits in this respect from a political settlement of the question of Cyprus.

European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Androulla Vassiliou urged on Monday the European Parliament and the European Council to support the increase for the budget of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions.

She further stressed that within the current economic and financial turmoil, Europe needs to invest in its human capital and its researchers.

The Commissioner awarded on Monday in Nicosia the first Marie Curie Prizes for Communicating Science, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Promising Research Talent.
