  • [01] EU TTE Council taking place in Luxembourg

The Transport, Telecommunications and Energy (TTE) Council, taking place in Luxembourg, was expected to reach a political agreement on a new regulation on the tachograph used in road transport.

The Council, chaired by Cypriot Minister of Communications and Works Efthymios Flourentzou, was set to discuss the new draft legislation on tachograph, which is designed to make fraud more difficult and to reduce the administrative burden, by introducing a satellite-linked "smart tachograph" as well as a number of new regulatory measures.

EU Ministers were also to hold a debate on a proposed update of the rules on periodic roadworthiness tests for motor vehicles, intended to improve road safety and protection of the environment.

[02] Third member of the Committee for Missing Persons to take over soon

The third member of the Committee for Missing Persons (CMP), Paul Henri Arni from Switzerland, is expected to assume his duties soon, probably within this week, President of the Parliamentary Committee on Refugees and Missing Persons Skevi Koutra Koukouma said on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion of Cyprus' Missing Persons Day, Koukouma expressed hope that procedures aiming to ascertain the fate of missing persons will accelerate.

Moreover, the Cypriot MP said that the CMP Anthropological Laboratory has been staffed with two more anthropologists, as well as two experienced geneticists that will train their younger colleagues.

[03] Omirou requests help from Europeans for missing persons

President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou has called on his European counterparts to exert their influence so that Turkey terminates its intransigent and inhumane stance on the issue of missing persons.

In a letter to the President of the European Parliament, the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, and the Presidents of parliaments of European countries, Omirou refers to the 29th of October, which has been established as a day of remembrance of missing persons, noting that the issue is above all humanitarian and has been tormenting a large portion of the population for 38 years.

Omirou notes that, despite UN resolutions and other decisions by international and European organisations, including the European Court of Human Rights, as well as many calls from national governments and parliaments towards the Turkish government, Turkey has been refusing to provide any information regarding the fate of Cypriot missing persons.
