    Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis departs on Sunday for Luxembourg to participate in the meetings of the upcoming Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) and Foreign Affairs/Development Council of the European Union, scheduled for October 15.

    Kozakou-Marcoullis will also preside over a number of Political Dialogue and Association Council meetings with third countries on behalf of the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Baroness Catherine Ashton.

    During the FAC meeting, which will be chaired by the High Representative, the EU Foreign Affairs Ministers will discuss developments in the EU's Southern Neighbourhood, with a special focus on Syria and Egypt, particularly in view of the upcoming EU Ministerial meeting with the Arab League and the EU - Egypt Task Force meeting.

    [02] Defence Minister briefs SEDE delegation

    Defence Minister Demetris Eliades met on Friday with a delegation from the European Parliament's subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) and briefed them on the Cyprus EU Presidency and its future activities.

    Eliades informed the members of the delegation that the Defence Ministry is in close cooperation with the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, the European External Action Service (EEAS) and all partners for the promotion of issues concerning the common foreign and security policy (CFSP).

    The Cypriot Minister referred to the successful meetings of the Presidency on defence issues and the Informal Defence Policy Directors Meeting. Special reference was made to the Informal Defence Ministers' meeting that was held last month in Nicosia.

    [03] House of Representatives to host XLVIII COSAC

    The House of Representatives will host, from October 14-16, the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of Parliaments of the European Union - XLVIII COSAC, as part of the parliamentary dimension of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

    Discussions at the Conference will focus on the Priorities of the Cyprus Presidency, the State of the Union, as well as the topics of Energy - Security of Supply, Single Market - Governance and the Europe 2020 Strategy - Recovery from the Economic Crisis, as well as making "More Europe" a reality.

    The Conference will adopt Conclusions and the Contribution of COSAC to the EU institutions.

    [04] European Parliament resolution calls for solidarity in EU Asylum Policy

    A European Parliament resolution, under the title "Enhanced intra-EU solidarity in the field of asylum", outlines proposals on making the vague notion of solidarity in EU Asylum Policy work in practice.

    As Cypriot Rapporteur, Kyriakos Triantafyllides, explained during a presentation of the resolution in Nicosia, on Friday, this includes proposals on the unification and better use of relevant EU funds, enhancing the role of the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) and the establishment of a permanent EU Relocation Mechanism, which should take into consideration the capabilities of each member state as well as a refugee's particular circumstances.

    "It is commonly recognised by the results achieved that current asylum systems have failed", he noted, adding that "we all know what happens in Greece, Malta and Cyprus."

    [05] Commissioner for Children`s Rights takes over ENOC Presidency

    Commissioner for Children's Rights Leda Koursoumba took over on Friday the Presidency of the European Network of Ombudspersons for Children (ENOC), during the ENOC General Assembly held here.

    Koursoumba will preside over ENOC until October 2013.

    ENOC General Assembly meeting voted Friday an official Statement of the Network which concerns the effective prevention and intervention with a view to address juvenile delinquency in Europe and which was drafted during the 16th Annual Conference that took place in Nicosia October 10-11 on "Juvenile Delinquency - Child Friendly Justice, Structures and Processes for Prevention and Intervention"

    [06] President congratulates President of ECJ on re-election

    President Demetris Christofias has sent a congratulatory message to the President of the European Court of Justice Vassilios Skouris on his re-election.

    In his message Christofias assures of his readiness "to enhance even further the very close relations between the Republic of Cyprus and the European Court of Justice."

    According to an official press release, in his congratulatory message, President Christofias said that "on the occasion of your re-election to the post of the President of the European Court of Justice, for the fourth consecutive time, I wish to congratulate you and convey to you the warmest and whole-hearted wishes of the people of Cyprus, the government and myself for every success in your high duties."
