  • [01] Australian Minister and REACTION discuss road safety

Ways to improve road safety were the focus of a meeting on Tuesday in Nicosia between Minister for Police, Correctional Services, Emergency Services, Road Safety and Multicultural Affairs of South Australia Jennifer Rankine with the Chairman and members of the Board of Directors of REACTION group for youth and road safety.

During the meeting, both sides presented data and exchanged views and experiences on road safety, especially concerning young people. In statements to CNA, Rankine said she has "responsibility for road safety in South Australia" and noted that "young people make up 12% of our population but they are making up 23% of deaths on our roads".

"So I was very keen to come to REACTION and hear how they are working with young people to both educate them and change their behaviour on the roads," Rankine added.

Speaking to CNA, Chairman of the Board of Directors of REACTION Marios Stavrou said "we had a very constructive meeting with the Minister" and noted that the organisation deals with almost all issues under the responsibility of the Minister. Stavrou noted that Rankine was "briefed on all actions carried out by REACTION in Cyprus and the EU" and "she briefed us on various actions in her area."

[02] EU Commissioner advocates sustainable growth

The EU must tap the growth potential of the Single Market to the full, if it wants to take a sustainable growth path, JoaquĆn Almunia Vice President of the European Commission responsible for Competition Policy, stressed on Tuesday, while speaking at a conference in Nicosia, on the occasion of the European Competition Day.

Commissioner Almunia said that the twin imperatives to consolidate public budgets and solve the euro crisis for good are taking their toll on the European economies and on the standards of living of the European people, adding that the latest steps taken by the European institutions go in the right direction.

Cyprus Commerce Minister Neoklis Sylikiotis stressed from his part that under the current difficult economic conditions it is of great importance to ensure that the market for basic consumer goods, food and other necessities, operates for the benefit of consumers. Loukia Christodoulou, Chairperson of the Cyprus Commission for the Protection of Competition and Judge of the European Court of Justice George Arestis also addressed the event.
