  • [01] Potocnik: Turkey should ensure European safety standards in nuclear plants

As an EU candidate member Turkey should ensure international and European safety standards in the construction and operation of nuclear plants, EU Environment Commissioner Janez Potocnik has said.

According to an official press release Potocnik, who was speaking during a meeting he had with Parliamentary Committee of Environment in Nicosia, also pointed out the important role national parliaments have to play in promoting a fully fledged approach for growth via an effective use of resources and in ensuring the full and effective implementation of ‘acquis communautaire' as regards the environment.

During the meeting, he exchanged points of view with Cypriot MPs on matters pertaining to his area of competence.

[02] John Koenig to be the next US Ambassador in Nicosia

American diplomat John Koenig has been selected by the White House to serve as the next US Ambassador in Nicosia, according to sources.

The announcement is expected to take place soon and the Cypriot government has already been notified so that it can proceed with issuing an approval of the appointment.

Koenig has served as political advisïr in Cyprus (1994-97), in the US Embassy in Athens (1997 – 2000) and as Consul General in Thessaloniki (2000 – 2003). In September 2009 he was appointed Political Advisor to the Commander, Allied Joint Force Command in Naples.

He has held a number of senior positions in US diplomatic missions in Europe.

[03] EU Commission publishes Report on Immigration and Asylum

European Commission published on Friday a Report on 2011 developments in the areas of immigration and asylum and a Eurobarometer on attitudes towards cross-border mobility, immigration and security.

Eight out of ten Europeans agree that EU member states should provide protection and asylum to those who need it and also that rules for asylum applicants should be uniform, the Eurobarometer data shows.

The great majority of Europeans polled (67%) considers it important to be able to travel within the EU without internal border controls.

The percentage of Cypriots answering positively the same question is 87%.
