  • [01] ‘Green Growth' and trade relations discussed at EU Council

‘Green Growth' and progress on EU trade relations with Japan, USA, Canada, India and China were discussed at the trade formation of the EU Foreign Affairs Council on Thursday, in Brussels.

According to an official press release Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Neoklis Sylikiotis who represented the Republic at the Council highlighted Cyprus' support for the intensification of efforts on the part of the European Commission towards the liberalization of trade of environment friendly products and services.

Referring to bilateral EU – Japan trade talks, Sylikiotis, said the Republic supports the beginning of a dialogue, noting that it is an initiative which ought to be undertaken with a view to open up trade and enhance transparency in the trade relations between the two partners.

At the same time, he congratulated EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht for his efforts and called on the Commission to take into considerations the concerns raised by certain member states that before talks begin Japan should commit itself to substantive negotiations on all matters and that it will show the will to lift obstacles which distort trade with the EU.
