  • [01] Cyprus and Denmark sign Memorandum on EU Presidency

Cyprus and Denmark signed on Monday a Memorandum of Understanding providing for cooperation during the Cyprus EU Presidency. According to an official announcement, the Memorandum was signed in Brussels, by Cyprus' Agriculture Minister Sofoklis Aletraris and Danish Minister for the Environment Ida Auken.

The Memorandum provides that part of the chairmanship of working groups on international environmental issues and forestry will be assigned to Denmark during the second semester of 2012.

This practice, it is noted, has been followed in the past by member states such as the Czech Republic and Slovenia, who assigned the chairmanship of certain meetings on international issues to France and Sweden respectively.

The political responsibility lies with the Republic of Cyprus, while Cypriot officers will attend the meetings and monitor negotiations. At Ministerial meetings, the Minister of Agriculture will act on behalf of the EU, the announcement concludes.

[02] Britain to assist Cyprus in view of EU Presidency

Britain is ready to offer technical and any other assistance to the government of Cyprus, ahead of its EU Presidency to begin July 1st, to successfully complete this huge task, British Employment Minister Chris Crayling said Tuesday, after a meeting with Cypriot Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Soteroulla Charalambous.

In statements to the press after the meeting, the Cypriot Minister said they mainly discussed the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency and exchanged views on issues of mutual interest.

Grayling said his country looks very much forward to the upcoming Cypriot Presidency, adding that with his Cypriot counterpart they discussed the agenda of the Presidency and particularly the challenges in labor markets.

"To come to Cyprus and share experiences, to work together in meeting these huge challenges is something that I value enormously, we regard our friendship with Cyprus as of very great importance", he noted.
