[01] Children from Libya received by the President of the RepublicPresident of the Republic Demetris Christofias received Thursday at the presidential palace children from war-torn Libya. Twenty-six children mainly from the cities of Misrata and Zavia are visiting the island at the Cypriot Foreign Minister's invitation.President Christofias expressed Cyprus' friendly feelings toward the Arab peoples, noting that Cyprus-Libya friendship dates prior to the independence of Cyprus, but especially after Cyprus gained independence founder of the republic of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios III established very good relations with the leaders of the Arab world, in the framework of the Non-aligned Movement. President Christofias wished that democracy prevailed in Libya after the war, explaining that the people of Cyprus have also suffered the consequences of the war. "We wish to work all together to put an end to wars, hunger and misery, in the world, particularly in Africa" he said, adding that Cyprus Government is in contact with the Libyan Government to assist in Libya' s reconstruction. Libyan Charge d' Affaires in Cyprus Salah Abourgigha thanked the people of Cyprus and the Government for their support to Libya, noting that the two countries maintain excellent relations. Salah Abourgigha expressed his government readiness to enhance Cyprus-Libya relations and referred to the efforts aiming to reconstruct the country. [02] Omirou: MEPs to press Turkey to call off nuclear plant plansHouse President Yiannakis Omirou called on MEPs to exert pressure on Turkey to cancel its plans for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Akkuyu, in the southern shores of Turkey and close to the island of Cyprus.According to an official announcement, Omirou met Thursday in Nicosia with MEPs, members of the European Parliament Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, who are visiting Cyprus in view of the country's EU Presidency term, due next semester. The delegation of MEPs consists of Cristina Gutierrez-Cortines, Christa Klass, Anna Rosbach, Eleni Theocharous and Andrea Zanoni. During the meeting, the President of the House of Representatives noted that the legislative body is following EU rules while dealing with environmental or other related issues. He added however its inability to implement environmental policies in the area under Turkish occupation, amounting to 37% of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus. [03] Cypriot doctors to perform operations in LibyaA team of Cypriot doctors from the private sector will be travelling to Libya in the next few weeks in order to examine patients that are in critical condition, in the framework of the cooperation that is being promoted between Cyprus and Libya in the medical field.According to an official statement, Minister of Health Stavros Malas was on a two-day working visit to Libya where he discussed the possibility Libyan patients to be transferred to Cyprus for treatment as well as the possibility Cypriot doctors to perform operations in Libya especially in the fields of neurosurgery, plastic surgery, orthopedics and pediatric surgery. In the field of Pediatric surgery, a Memorandum of Understanding has been prepared and the two countries will soon sign it.
