    Cyprus` Permanent Representative at the UN Nikolaos Emiliou was unanimously elected on Monday as Chairman of the United Nations Committee on Relations with the Host Country.

    Chaired since 1971 by successive Permanent Representatives of Cyprus, the Committee meets every two months, although emergency meetings can be requested by any UN member state at any time.

    All states may participate in the work of the Committee as observers, but only Committee members may vote. The Committee deals with the full range of issues concerning the relationship between the host country and the United Nations community: the security of the missions and their personnel, visas, immigration and customs procedures, and taxation, diplomatic indebtedness, housing, transportation and parking, insurance, education, and health matters, and public relations issues with the host city.

    The United Nations Committee on Relations with the Host Country was established in 1971 by General Assembly Resolution 2819. At present, the Committee is composed of 19 member states: Bulgaria, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Cote d`Ivoire, Cuba, Cyprus, France, Honduras, Hungary, Iraq, Libya, Malaysia, Mali, Russian Federation, Senegal, Spain, United Kingdom, and the United States.

    [02] Cyprus unemployment hits 10% in March

    Unemployment in Cyprus was 10% in March 2012, compared to 9,8% in February, according to figures released on Wednesday by Eurostat. Unemployment in the euro area was 10.9% in March 2012, compared to 10.8% in February and 9.9% in March 2011.

    In the EU27 the unemployment rate was 10.2% in March 2012, which remains stable compared to February. Eurostat estimates that 24.772 million men and women in the EU27, of whom 17.365 million were in the euro area, were unemployed in March 2012.

    Compared with February 2012, the number of persons unemployed increased by 193. 000 in the EU27 and by 169.000 in the euro area. Compared with March 2011, unemployment rose by 2.123 million in the EU27 and by 1.732 million in the euro area.

    Among the Member States, the lowest unemployment rates were recorded in Austria (4.0%), the Netherlands (5.0%), Luxembourg (5.2%) and Germany (5.6%), and the highest in Spain (24.1%) and Greece (21.7% in January 2012). The highest increases were registered in Greece (14.7% to 21.7% between January 2011 and January 2012), Spain (20.8% to 24.1%) and Cyprus (6.9% to 10.0%).
