  • [01] Cyprus points out significance of EU policies

The EU Multiannual Financial Framework for the period 2014-2020 was discussed on Tuesday at the General Affairs Council, where Cypriot Undersecretary to the President for EU Affairs Andreas Mavroyiannis pointed out the importance of the Social Cohesion Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy for Cyprus.

The Danish Presidency presented the revised draft of the negotiating framework on the two policies. The purpose of the meeting was to provide a forum for member states to air their views on important political aspects of the Financial Framework, depending on their priorities, to draft the basis on which the Framework will be discussed by the June European Council.

Mavroyiannis said Cyprus was facing particular challenges as a small island state, with permanent natural disadvantages, which were not adequately addressed in the proposed framework.

He pointed out that Cyprus was the furthest away from the EU economic centre, which adversely affected its participation in the internal market, and requested that Cyprus` particularities be taken into consideration.

[02] Defence Minister: Turkey remains exposed

The new threats and challenges for regional security in the Eastern Mediterranean, especially after the start of the Arab Spring in relation to developments in Syria and Iran, were discussed here Tuesday during a conference organized by the Center for European and International Affairs of the University of Nicosia in cooperation with the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Cyprus and the representation of Rossotrudnichestvo.

Addressing the conference, Minister of Defence Demetris Eliades said that Turkey, in the absence of any legal points, resorts to threats and provocations.

The Minister said, inter alia, that «during the Cyprus Presidency of the European Council, we are going to highlight developments in the Middle East and promote dialogue on the region and with people of the region".

He noted that "the existence of significant gas reserves in Cyprus' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) creates new perspectives for our country", adding that "today Cyprus exercises its sovereign rights in its EEZ with respect and in full compliance to international law – the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea."
