of Cyprus [01] Tusk: The EU must not accept any threats against the Republic of CyprusThe EU should not accept any Turkish threats against the Republic of Cyprus, which will assume the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of 2012, Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk has stressed.Speaking on Wednesday during a press conference with President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias in Nicosia, the Polish Prime Minister noted that the Republic of Cyprus will assume the EU presidency as a member state of the Union and will thus represent the whole Union. Moreover, Tusk expressed hope that the Cyprus talks continue so that a solution is found in Cyprus, which has been divided since the Turkish invasion in 1974. In his statements, President Christofias said that Turkish threats to upgrade the so called state in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus as well as its threats to freeze its relations with the EU during Cyprus` six monthly rotating EU presidency, can not be accepted by the EU or the international community. The Cypriot President also said that Turkey should abide by international law, otherwise, as he stressed, Ankara is not worthy to have the status of a candidate country for accession to the EU. [02] Downer to meet UNSG ThursdaySpecial Advisor of the Secretary-General in Cyprus Alexander Downer is set to meet UNSG Ban Ki-Moon on Thursday , in view of his report on the course of the Cyprus talks.Earlier, Downer will meet Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Lynn Pascoe. Diplomatic sources told CNA that the SG has not yet decided on his next steps on the Cyprus problem and that his final decisions will be made following the meeting with Downer. The sources did not exclude the possibility of SG having consultations with the permanent members of the Security Council on the matter. [03] Commerce Minister to participate in EU Energy CouncilCypriot Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Neoclis Sylikiotis will be flying to Horsens, Denmark, on Wednesday to participate in the Informal Council of Energy Ministers, to be held on April 19 and 20.The Council will discuss the progress of member states concerning the implementation of the Directive on Energy Efficiency, which aims at a 20% reduction of energy consumption on an EU level by 2020, as well as the Energy Roadmap 2050, which sets the strategic aims for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and securing the EU`s energy supply and competitiveness.
