  • [01] Karpasia Bishop blocks off Ayios Dhometios crossing

Karpasia Bishop Christoforos and four other clerics stopped Wednesday morning traffic at Ayios Dhometios crossing point for an hour and a half in protest against occupation regime's refusal to allow the bishop to cross to the occupied areas to attend to his congregation on the eve of Easter.

In statements to the press, Christoforos said that the aim of their protest was to request the restoration of free movement of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in their homeland and to exercise their religious rights and freedoms unobstructed. Moreover he called on Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu to meet with a view to solve the problem for the sake of both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

Christoforos noted that he has already exhausted all channels of communication with the government, the international community – the United Nations, the EU, the five permanent members of the Security Council, the US Embassy and the British High Commission – as well as with the Turkish Cypriot community but to no avail.

The Bishop noted that he protested because he is not allowed to pass to the occupied areas and perform his religious duties and rituals, noting that he is not a politician and calling on those who can help to contribute in reaching a settlement to the Cyprus problem, so that Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots can live together.

[02] President: Movement at crossing points should be unhindered

Cypriot President Demetris Christofias has said that movement of people at the crossing points in Cyprus should be unhindered and in line with the laws.

He added that the Greek Cypriot side should not create and support conditions for the occupation regime in Cyprus to reduce the flow on both sides of the crossing points.

In statements to the press following visits to military camps in view of the Easter holidays and replying to a question concerning the protest of the Turkish Cypriot Teachers` Guild for the controls of the occupying authorities at crossing points that hinder the movement, President Christofias said that ``they are right to complain".

He added that the Greek Cypriot side should also be careful with any acts and moves that provide excuses to the occupying regime in Cyprus for such an action.
