Cyprus will host a series of events and functions, to further enhance the role of women, during its EU Presidency in the second half of 2012, Minister of Justice and Public Order Loucas Louca has said. Addressing an event organized by the Cyprus Federation of Business and Professional Women, titled "Women's Empowerment Towards Equality", Louca said cooperation between Cyprus and the EU on gender equality is becoming closer as the Cypriot EU Presidency approaches.

"Our main priority is violence against women within the family," Louca said, pointing out that this kind of violence constitutes one of the biggest obstacles in achieving equality between men and women. The Minister noted that despite progress achieved during the past few years in Cyprus on gender equality, especially in employment, there are still some problems and discrimination against women which reflect prejudices and stereotypes on the role of men and women.

"The fight against social stereotypes, improving the position and the role of women in the labour marker, in education, the economy, in social and political life, are the basic priorities of the National Action Plan on Gender Equality (2007-2013)", Louca stressed. In addition, he said that according to a recent evaluation report on the implementation of the National Action Plan on Gender Equality 2007-2010, significant progress has been made on labour equality and on violence against women.
