[01] US Congressman: US must re-assess Cyprus policyUS Congressman Howard Berman has sent a letter to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, urging a thoroughgoing re-assessment of US Cyprus policy, taking into account Turkey's threats and its colonialist transfer of population from the Turkish mainland to occupied Cyprus.In his letter to Clinton, Berman refers to "Turkey's threatened military action in response to Cyprus' exploration for hydrocarbons in its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and its agreement with Israel regarding hydrocarbon development". "American positions on reunification proposals must make clear our country's strong support for all of the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus, including its right to the natural resources of all its legal territory, including its EEZ", he says. As he notes, "by any interpretation, Turkey's threats constitute bullying and are way out of line". He also refers to the Cyprus problem and "Turkey's increasingly draconian efforts to alter the demographic composition of Cyprus". Berman notes that according to both Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots press reporting, Turkey has sent hundreds of thousands of Turkish citizens to Cyprus since 1974, adding that the number of authentic Turkish Cypriots living in the occupied area has actually declined over the past 38 years and is now dwarfed by the number of Turkey origin Turkish residents. [02] Cypriot scientists involved eye researchCypriot and US scientists are involved in research which raises hopes for people who suffer from a serious eye disease, called ``solar-related macular degeneration``.Scientists from the University of Cyprus, the University of California at Riverside and Princeton University are involved in a promising new drug that could cure this eye disease, which sometimes causes blindness. The disease – solar related macular degeneration – relates to irreversible damage caused to the light sensing nerves on the retina, with the main risk factors being age and UV radiation. Bright light straight from the sun, or from reflective surfaces such as from snow or the ocean will ‘age' the macula, which is used to read, write and drive among other things. According to a press release by the University of Cyprus, introducing appropriated changes in an existing drug, the research groups from the three universities have created an improved activity of the drug, raising hopes for the creation of a drug that would treat the disease.
