[01] Cyprus Foreign Minister wraps up Kazakhstan visitCyprus Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis wraps up a visit to Kazakhstan, were she had contact with government officials and signed a Protocol on cooperation between the Foreign Ministries of the two sides, as well as a Memorandum between the Ministries of Education.According to an official announcement, Marcoullis' visit was made at the invitation of her Kazakh counterpart Yerzhan Kazykhanov and coincided with the 20-year anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. It also signals the forthcoming visit of President Demetris Christofias, the first ever visit of a President of the Republic of Cyprus to the country. During talks, the two sides reviewed bilateral and EU-Kazakhstan relations, while Marcoullis briefed Kazykhanov on the latest developments concerning the Cyprus problem, the hydrocarbon exploration activities is Cyprus' Exclusive Economic Zone and preparations for the Presidency of the EU Council, which Nicosia will chair in the second half of the year. The two Ministers also evaluated the efforts for deepening ties between the two countries as positive and referred to the political will on behalf of their respective governments to enhance the institutional framework of cooperation. Marcoullis noted that Kazakhstan can count on Cyprus, a friendly country which is a member of the EU and said she welcomed the initiatives of Kazakhstan that have promoted the country as a constructive part of the international community. While in Astana, the capital, the Cypriot Foreign Minister also met with the Finance Minister Bolat B. Zhamishev, the Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Sagintayev B. Abdirovich, while she was received by the Undersecretary to the President Mukhtar Kul – Mukhammed and the President of the Senate Kayrat Mami Marcoullis departed today from Astana to the Armenian capital Yerevan, where she will conduct a two day visit, the announcement concludes. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. Peace talks are currently underway to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite the country, under a federal roof.
