  • [01] President: Turkey should be confronted as an occupation force

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias has addressed Sunday a message of support to the Greek people thanking at the same time Greece for being unwavering at our side despite difficulties undergoing due to the economic crisis.

Cyprus commemorated Sunday with various events the 25th of March 1821, when the Greek Revolution officially started aiming to free Greece from 400 years of Ottoman occupation.

In Nicosia, Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus Chrysostomos II led a doxology at the Faneromeni Church in the presence of President Christofias and House President Yiannakis Omirou, Greece's Ambassador in Nicosia Vassilios Papaioannou, members of the Council of Ministers, Cypriot Members of the Parliament, Cypriot Members of the European Parliament, government and party officials, as well as other diplomats.

After the doxology, a pupils' parade was held in front of the Greek Embassy in Nicosia.

Speaking after the parade, President Christofias said ``I would like to address a warm message of support to the Greek people and the political leadership and to thank at the same time, because despite the trials Greece undergoes, stands unwavering at the side of Cyprus and to its struggle against occupation and the reunification of our country and people``.

President Christofias said we should find ways to persuade the international community as well as the European Union to confront Turkey as an occupation force which violates the international law and the human rights of the people of Cyprus and to exert pressure and influence to follow another policy.

``There is no other way and this should be understood by all``, he added.

Cypriot President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu have been engaged in direct negotiations which began in 2008 with a view to solve the problem of Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.

[02] Cyprus must prove it is a responsible EU member

By assuming the Presidency of the Council of the EU during the second half of 2012, Cyprus must prove that it is equal to the rest of the member states of the EU and also a responsible member of the Union, by constructively contributing to the procedures aiming to deepen the European integration, President of the House of Representatives Giannakis Omirou said here Saturday.

Omirou was speaking during a workshop organized by the Office of International Relations of the Cyprus socialist party EDEK, on "The importance of the Cyprus EU Presidency – The contribution of the House of Representatives".

EU is experiencing a financial crisis and for this reason protection of the citizens in regards to social challenges is essential to avoid cultivation of anti-European attitudes and for the citizens to realize that efforts are made in view of finding effective solutions to the their financial and social problems, Omirou pointed out.

According to the Speaker of the House, during the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU the Parliament will host eight Parliamentary Conferences with the participation of the Presidents and the members of the Parliamentary Committees on European Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Interior, Finance, Labour and Social Affairs, Agriculture and Environment, as well as on Human Rights. A joint parliamentary meeting with the European Parliament will also take place, according to Omirou.

Deputy Minister for EU Affairs, Andreas Mavroyiannis, underlined the importance of the cooperation between Cyprus and the current Danish Presidency of the Council, as well as with all the European institutions, especially the European Parliament, described by Mavroyiannis as a key-player in the promotion of legislative proposals.

Addressing the workshop MEP Kyriakos Mavronikolas said that in such a difficult period for the finances of Europe, during the Cyprus Presidency of the EU there will be tough negotiations and it is the Presidency's responsibility to propose compromising solutions.

[03] Omirou: Cyprus Hellenism to continue the struggle

Cyprus Hellenism is obliged to continue the struggle for its national survival, President of the House of Representatives Giannakis Omirou, has said here Sunday.

Omirou was speaking after a pupils' parade held in front of the Greek Embassy in Nicosia.

Speaker of the House pointed out that Turkey's expansionism obviously aims to halt the historical continuity of Hellenism in Cyprus.

What is needed to overcome the current deadlock in the negotiations between the President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish-Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglou, is an outline of the red lines beyond which we should not be expected to move, Speaker of the House said, pointing out that Cyprus must take advantage of its membership in the EU to call things by their name, by stressing the violation of the principles of the European and international law on its territory.

It is the international and European community's responsibility to exercise pressure on Turkey in order to secure stability, peace and cooperation in Eastern Mediterranean, President of the House underlined.

Cyprus commemorated Sunday with various events the 25th of March 1821, when the Greek Revolution officially started aiming to free Greece from 400 years of Ottoman occupation.
