  • [01] Omirou :Cyprus cannot remain the only divided country in Europe

Cyprus House of Representatives President Yiannakis Omirou, in a written statement on the occasion of the Greek National Day, says that Cyprus cannot and should not remain the only divided country in Europe.

Greeks celebrate on 25th March the 1821 revolution, marking the launch of the Greek struggle for independence from Ottoman rule.

Omirou stresses in his statement, that Europe should not tolerate the presence of an occupation army in a state member of the European Union.

``We should insist in the vesting of the rights of the Cypriot people, the withdrawal of Turkish troops and Turkish settlers, the assurance of an effective function of state, the peaceful coexistence with our Turkish Cypriot compatriots, the prosperity and progress of the whole people of Cyprus``, he adds.

He stresses that our struggle is just and in such struggles, failure is not acceptable.

``Our heavily heritage we celebrate today dictate us to struggle firm and steadfastly for the end of occupation, the assurance of human and basic freedoms of the whole Cyprus people``, he concludes.

Cypriot President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu have been engaged in direct negotiations which began in 2008 with a view to solve the problem of Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.

[02] Cyprus` EU presidency will promote conference tourism

Organising more than 200 conferences in Cyprus during the Republic’s Presidency of the EU Council in the second half of the year offers the opportunity to promote Cyprus as a destination for conference tourism, Cyprus Tourism Organization (CTO) acting director general Lefkos Fylaktides has told CNA.

In an interview with CNA on the role of CTO in Cyprus EU Presidency, Fylaktides said he was certain that the CTO will meet its obligations in accommodating and hosting delegates who will visit Cyprus during the presidency, noting that “we are not being complacent and we are working very closely with the Secretariat of the Cyprus Presidency to achieve the best possible outcome.``

He stressed that CTO acknowledges that a successful presidency is a matter of utmost importance for Cyprus, calling on all stakeholders who will be involved in accommodating and hosting delegates to give their best self for a successful outcome.
