[01] Two new Ministers sworn in

The Government Spokesman announced Monday the President’s decision to reshuffle part of his Cabinet, after the decision of Finance Minister Kikis Kazamias to step down, due to health concerns.

Neoclis Sylikiotis was sworn in as the new Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, replacing Praxoula Antoniadou. Sylikiotis’ place at the Ministry of Interior is being taken up by former Nicosia Mayor Eleni Mavrou.

Speaking during the ceremony, President Christofias said the new Ministers are assuming their responsibilities today and noted that the new composition of the Cabinet, which he described as “renewal”, will provide the necessary impetus to the government to continue seamlessly and efficiently its work, until the end of its mandate.

The President noted that the process will be completed next Friday, with the affirmation of the new Finance Minister.

According to yesterday’s announcement by the government, Kikis Kazamias will be replaced by Vasos Shiarlis, former banker and currently the Head of the Health and Insurance Organization.

[02] Direct talks to continue Thursday

The meeting, scheduled to start at 1000, will take place at the Chief of Mission`s residence in the United Nations Protected Area of Nicosia.

The previous meeting between the leaders of the two communities took place on March 15.

Speaking to the press United Nations Spokesperson Michel Bonnardeaux said that the leaders continued their discussion on property and agreed that meetings at the level of representatives and experts will also take place to carry the discussion on property forward.

[03] Eliades travels to Brussels for the EU Defence Council

According to an official announcement, the current EU operations as well as relations with other organizations are on the agenda of the Council, to take place on Thursday.

The Cypriot Minister will attend the meeting of the European Defence Agency, which will discuss the Pooling and Sharing initiative.

He will hold contacts with the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz, and MEPs Hanes Svoboda, Michael Gahler, Kyriakos Mavronikolas and Eleni Kopa.

Eliades will also meet with high officials from the European External Action Service, the European Defence Agency, the European Union Military Committee and the European Union Military Staff with whom he will discuss issues regarding the Cyprus EU Presidency the second half of 2012 and other matters of mutual interest.

[04] Greco-Cypriot proposal for new sport convention

The proposal was tabled during a Council of Europe (CoE) Sports Ministers’ Conference in Belgrade, on March 13-14, entitled ``The promotion of the integrity of sport against match-fixing.”

Speaking during the discussion, Cyprus Sport Organisation President Pambos Stylianou said the phenomenon of match-fixing is associated with illegal betting and it is getting constantly worse.

``The current financial crisis affects sport in a negative manner, as it creates an environment in which corruption can thrive and increase dramatically. Under these circumstances, our reaction should be a new convention to create the platform to tackle the threat to our sport heritage,`` he said.
