[01] Martens congratulates Anastasiades on election
European People`s Party (EPP) President Wilfried Martens has congratulated
Nicos Anastasiades on his election as the candidate for President of
Cyprus by the Executive Council of his party DISY.
Saying that for the past 15 years, he had worked very closely with Nicos
Anastasiades, in the framework of the EPP Summit of heads of state and
government and party leaders, Martens pointed out that during these years,
Nicos Anastasides has worked tirelessly to promote Cyprus and the Cyprus
problem in Europe.
“Therefore, it not surprising that he is highly regarded and respected by
our 16 presidents and prime ministers in the European Council,`` he said
Martens added that Nicos Anastasiades is an important Cypriot asset
in Europe and an important European asset in Cyprus. He also said that
Europe`s leaders “still fondly remember and appreciate the statesmanship
and European commitment which he displayed in securing the ratification
of the Lisbon Treaty in the Cypriot parliament 4 years ago”.
