[01] Leaders continue discussion on property at Cyprus talks

Speaking after the meeting, which took place at the Chief of Mission`s residence in the United Nations Protected Area of Nicosia, United Nations Spokesperson Michel Bonnardeaux said “the leaders met this morning for over one hour and continued their discussion on property”.

Bonnardeaux also said that the leaders will meet again on Thursday 22nd March in the morning. They agreed that meetings at the level of Representatives and experts will also take place to carry the discussion on property forward”, he concluded.

[02] UN continues efforts for Cyprus solution

Ban received on Wednesday Cyprus Permanent Ambassador to the UN, Minas Hadjimichael who bid him farewell as the Cypriot Ambassador is leaving New York to assume on April 1st his post as the new Ambassador of Cyprus in Berlin.

Hadjimichael conveyed to the Secretary General Cyprus President Demetris Christofas’ greetings and thanked him for his ongoing efforts on the Cyprus problem, as well as his personal involvement in efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem. Ban and Hadjimichael reviewed the situation as regards the Cyprus problem and discussed latest developments, as well as prospects lying ahead. They also discussed the content of Secretary General’s latest report on Cyprus.

Ban asked Hadjimichael to convey his warm wishes to Christofias and assured him that he will continue his efforts for a settlement to the Cyprus problem. He also noted his constant interest in the Cyprus problem.

[03] Commissioner for Climate Action in Cyprus

According to a press release issued by the Commission, the meetings will cover preparations for the Cypriot presidency, including the Informal Environment Council to be held in Nicosia on 7-8 July. Talks will focus on domestic climate-related issues, discussions in Council of climate-related files, and preparation of the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development in June and of the UNFCCC climate change conference in Qatar in November.

Commissioner Hedegaard will be meeting with Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Sophocles Aletraris and Minister of Communications and Works Efthymios Flourentzou. She will also hold contacts with the Environment Committee of the House of Representatives.

The Commissioner will meet with representatives of the maritime industry, non-governmental organisations and the winners of the bi-communal photography and video competition on environment and climate change, organised last year by the European Commission Representation in Cyprus.

[04] UCY calls for measures for climate change

In an economic policy paper, signed by Theodoros Zachariades assistant professor of the Cyprus University of Technology Department of Environmental Science and Technology, the ERC notes that the consequences of climate change in the next decades are generally known while other consequences are covered by a degree of uncertainty which should not be underestimated.

It points out that climate change will put strain on the state budget in terms of compensation to private consumers who would not be able to adapt to climate change either due to the lack of financial resources or to the absence of knowledge.

According to the paper, the immediate consequences of climate change, temperature rise and reduction in rainfall vary depending on the region, adding however the region of the Mediterranean will be among the regions to be highly affected. On Cyprus the paper says that in the absence of a serious global greenhouse emissions reduction, the temperature is expected to rise by 1.3-1.9 degrees Celsius by the end of the 21st century and by 3.6-5 degrees by the end of the century.
