[03] Interior Minister optimistic about Common European Asylum SystemInterior Minister Neoklis Sylikiotis has expressed optimism that discussions on the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) during Cyprus’ EU Presidency in the second half of 2012 will conclude. In an interview with CNA, the Minister acknowledged that the CEAS is a complex issue, with a lot of differences in opinion among EU member states. However he said the objective to conclude these talks is realistic. He said that establishing a Common European Asylum System is not only a target set by the Cyprus Presidency but it is also adopted by the EU as a whole, recalling that in the conclusions of past European Councils, EU member states have highlighted the need to set up such a system by the end of 2012. “Establishing the CEAS is a step towards creating a better Europe, the EU has to operate in a way that it both assists all those who need protection but it also deals with the huge influx of migrants and people who take advantage of the current asylum systems”, Minister pointed out.
