  • [01] National Council convenes anew to discuss the Cyprus issue

The National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the question of Cyprus, convenes today and tomorrow in an all-day session to discuss all issues related to the course of the ongoing peace talks.

The meeting takes place in the wake of January’s meeting between the UN Secretary General, President Demetris Christofias and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Dervis Eroglu, at Greentree, New York.

The two sessions follow the previous two all-day sessions of the National Council, on February 15 and 17 respectively.

Today’s session is due to commence on 10am (0800 GMT) and following a brief recess at noon, a second part will follow at 4.30pm.

During the previous sessions, both President Christofias and the leaders of the six parliamentary parties presented their positions on the issue.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third.

Peace talks are currently underway to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite the country, under a federal roof.

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon met with President Christofias and Eroglu for the fifth time in January 2012, in Greentree, New York.

In his statements, following the meeting, Ban said limited progress was achieved and invited both sides to make decisive moves in the negotiation chapters of governance, property and citizenship.
