  • [01] Growth measures at Council of Ministers

Measures intended to boost growth are due to be discussed at the Council of Ministers meeting on March 9, Minister of Finance Kikis Kazamias has said.

In statements he made to the press on Friday Kazamias said that the measures will be submitted to “the Council of Ministers meeting on March 9 and immediately afterwards will be submitted to the House of Representatives, so I see no reason for the House to delay their adoption”.

He added that the legal vetting process of all measures the Ministry of Finance is in charge of has been completed, adding that approval of the Law Office of the Republic is expected for a number of measures which have been prepared by other bodies.

Replying to a question as to whether the subject matter of casinos will also be discussed during the next Council of Ministers meeting, Kazaamias said that matter is still pending.

    [02] Flourentzou for controllers` strike

Air traffic controllers’ strike creates problems with Nicosia FIR, Minister of Communications and Works Efthymios Flourentzou has noted. Flourentzou, who was replying to a question as to whether there is an effort to take advantage of the problems faced as a result of the air traffic controllers strike from the illegal regime in the occupied areas of the island, said that “the question has obvious answers”. “I don’t think that obvious matters need to be stated”, he said, adding that he does not intend to provide third parties with arguments.

Flourentzou further said that there is a problem as regards the Republic of Cyprus’ obligations towards the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), in the framework of which Nicosia FIR operates. The Republic of Cyprus’ rights in controlling Nicosia FIR are continuously challenged, he noted. Replying to a question as to whether the air traffic controllers strike is damaging to Cyprus, Flourentzou said that it results in significant losses.

As regards the resolution of the dispute between the government and the air traffic controllers, he pointed out that the matter will be discussed by all relevant bodies, the government, parliamentary parties and the relevant parliamentary committee. He further expressed his hope that there will be developments which will lead to a successful resolution of the dispute. Cyprus was divided in 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN led talks have been underway with an aim to reunify the island under a federal roof.

    [03] Sylikiotis comments Asylum System

Minister of Interior Neoklis Sylikiotis has pointed out the importance of the Asylum Service’s contribution for the successful implementation of one of the main priorities of the Cyprus EU Council rotating presidency to complete the Common European Asylum System by the end of 2012. Accrording to an official press release issued here on Friday, Sylikiotis, accompanied by Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior Andres Assiotis visited the offices of the Asylum Service and the Aliens and Migration Department.

Sylikiotis thanked the management and employees of the Aliens and Migration Department for their work highlighting the significant improvements accomplished in the last three years, in relation to both the building and the work environment of the Department.“These improvements have contributed greatly to a better and faster service of citizens since there has been a reduction in waiting time for processing of various applications as well as in the Department’s pending issues”, he said.

However, Sylikiotis added, there is still room for improvement of the Department’s efficiency in the various services provided to citizens and particularly in the area of communication with the public. The intensification of efforts will result in dealing with the concerns expressed by the public, he said. During his visit at the Asylum Service, Sylikiotis pointed out that the Service’s effective performance is felt in direct and indirect ways by the state and the Cypriot citizens.

[04] UCY poll for gender equality at work

The superiority of men in the work place, the acceptance of inequalities at work to the detriment of women, the lack of equal opportunities for women and inferior working conditions for women compared to men are some of the findings of a poll conducted by the University of Cyprus (UCY). Presenting the findings Head of UNESCO Chair on Gender Equality and Women`s Empowerment Mary Koutselini said that that the poll was conducted between October 2011 and February 2012, in a sample of 1,500, of which 860 were women and 650 men, working in both the public service and the private sector.

Among other issues the poll shows that there is a lack of sufficient information and support of women and that they feel insecure in their workplace. Further, 12% of participants, both men and women at a 1 to 3 ratio, said they had reported sexual harassment at work. In addition 25.3% of men business owners or managers and 13.3% said they had a Sexual Harassment Code in place.

Addressing the event Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Sotiroula Charalambous said “promoting female employment, with the right use of abilities and skills of women, constitutes a powerful tool for boosting the Cypriot economy”. She added however that in order for women to be integrated in the labour market successfully their equal treatment in the workplace must be ensured as well as their rights as women and as employees.
