[02] Cyprus and Germany committeed to work for the new CAPCyprus and Germany reaffirmed on Tuesday their commitment to work together towards a successful conclusion of the current negotiations in the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament on the further development of the Common Agricultural Policy beyond 2013, a joint statement by the Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Sofoclis Aletraris and the Minister of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection of Germany Ilse Aigner said. The two Ministers, who had talks here also reiterated their strong commitment to the three main objects of the future CAP i.e. viable food production, the sustainable management of natural resources and the development of rural areas. The future CAP should continue to remunerate farmers for their contributions for dealing with climate change, maintaining biodiversity, improving water and soil management and ensuring environment-friendly and animal welfare-conscious production. In this respect, they agree that in order for these objectives to be met in the period 2014-2020, the CAP needs an adequate budget. Both pillars of the CAP shall have sufficient financial resources to commensurate with the important role that agriculture and rural areas called upon to play in the years to come in pursuit of the Europe 2020 objectives, the Ministers said. They noted that they had a useful exchange of views on their positions regarding the proposals of the European Commission for further developing the CAP and explained each other the particularities of their agricultural sectors. They also discussed the upcoming Cyprus EU Presidency and the handling of the key issues of the agricultural and fisheries Council and Germany noted its willingness to provide any assistance necessary for its successful conclusion.
