  • [01] Leaders meet for the first time after Greentree

    UN-led peace talks for a political settlement in Cyprus continue on Tuesday between the leaders of the islands two communities.

    President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu will meet at 10 oclock this morning (08:00 GMT), their first meeting after their meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at Greentree in New York.

    The meeting will be taking place at the Chief of Missions residence in the United Nations Protected Area of Nicosia.

    Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the islands northern third. UN led talks have been underway since 2008 with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof

    In statements he made after a two day meeting he had with President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu at Greentree, New York, between January 24 and 26, UN Secretary General Ban Ki moon expressed hope that the leaders of the two communities will continue their efforts until the end of March, noting that then his Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alexander Downer, will assess the situation.

    The UNSG added that if Downer`s assessment is positive, he intends to call an international conference on the Cyprus issue.

    [02] German Food Minister visiting Cyprus

    German Federal Minister of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection Ilse Aigner will be paying an official visit to Cyprus on Tuesday.

    According to an official press release, the German Minister will be arriving at Larnaca Airport on Tuesday morning and right after she will be meeting with Cypriot Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Sophocles Aletraris.

    Following the meeting, the two Ministers will hold a press conference.

    Around noon, the German Minister will visit Goethe Institute in Nicosia and then she will visit Ledra Crossing Point, accompanied by Aletraris.

    [03] APOEL faces Olympique Lyonnais for Champions league knockout stage

    APOEL FC faces Tuesday night Olympique Lyonnais for the Champions League knockout stage.

    The match will be held in Stade de Gerland in Lyon and will begin on 21:45 local time (19.45 GMT).

    APOEL has already made history as it became the first Cypriot football club to reach the knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League, after finishing first in Group G.
