[01] Cyprus President pledges to strive for a solution

``We will strive with all our strength for a vindication. The perpetuation of division and the possibility a partition of Cyprus is tantamount to our destruction,`` he said addressing a ceremony for the celebration of Agios Maronas in the presence of visiting Maronite Patriarch Mar Bechara Boutros Rahi.

The President stressed ``I would like to assure you once more that I will not move from positions of principle for one state with single sovereignty, citizenship and international personality,`` he said, adding that he will strive for a solution that would rid Cyprus from settlers and would secure the unity of the state.

``The solution of the Cyprus problem is for us a life-long goal. We seek a mutually agreed solution, a solution to the benefit of all Cypriots, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins which would put an end to the occupation and would safeguard the human rights and freedoms of our people, a solution on the basis of a bi-communal bi-zonal federation with political equality as prescribed in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions`` he underlined.

Christofias also pointed out that every one should know that the continuation of the unacceptable status quo is solely due to the negative stance of the Turkish Cypriot leadership and Turkey.

Furthermore, in extempore remarks, Christofias referred to what he called as ``Turkification`` (the spread of Turkish settlers in Cyprus), noting as the Cyprus problem remains unresolved the Turkification is being completed.

``We have to deal with difficult interlocutors who unfortunately do not show particular interest for the solution of the Cyprus problem, which would be mutually agreed and would restore human rights of the Cypriot people,`` he said adding that despite their declarations ``they take measures consolidating illegal settlement and the fait acompli``.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. Peace talks are currently underway to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite the country, under a federal roof.

[02] Cyprus House President satisfied over Australia visit

Omirou concluded today a seven-day official visit to Australia, heading an inter-party House delegation. This morning the Cypriot delegation attended Mass at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of Our Lady Theotokos, in Sydney, the seat of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia.

Following Mass, the House President and the members of the delegation met with Archbishop Stylianos of Australia and the community.

[03] Cyprus beat Morocco for Davis Cup Europe/Africa Group tie

Cypriot Champion Marcos Baghdatis, 41st in world rankings, beat Morocco`s Idmbarek Yassine with 3-0 (6-4, 6-1, 6-0), securing the three necessary for Cyprus to win the tie over the Moroccan squad.

Yesterday Cyprus with Baghdatis and Cuzdriorean won the doubles match over Morocco`s Fatar/Racdhidi with 3-0. In the tie`s first day Baghdatis defeated Rachidi with 3-0 whereas Cyprus` Kyratzis succumbed to Idmbarek with 3-2.
