[01] Government satisfied with Russian FM`s statement on Cyprus

In a written statement, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said that ``the clear positions of the Russian Federation are a confirmation of the long lasting position of principles expressed by Moscow on the Cyprus issue``.

``The position of the Russian Federation is very important since it comes from a permanent member state of the UN Security Council and underlines the need that the UN resolutions are respected and implemented by all, without exceptions``, he said.

Stephanou added that the government notes with satisfaction that similar positions - like the ones expressed by Russia - are supported by France and China, also permanent members of the UN Security Council, as well as by other non-permanent states of the UN Security Council.

He noted that only with the implementation of the UN Security Council resolutions on Cyprus can a just, viable and functional solution of the Cyprus problem be achieved.

This solution, he said, would put an end to the Turkish occupation of Cyprus, would put an end to Ankara`s policy of illegally bringing to Cyprus Turkish settlers and would reunify the country on the basis of a bicommunal, bizonal federation with political equality, as defined in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

``A solution that would provide for one state, with one and only sovereignty, one citizenship and one international personality``, he added.

Stephanou pointed out that these positions have been supported by President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias since he assumed office.

``With consistency and determination, the President of Cyprus defended the above positions during the New York meeting``, Stephanou said, adding that President Christofias acted fully in accordance with the decision of the National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus issue.

Referring in more detail to the announcement by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Stephanou said that it stresses that the comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem must be based on the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and that the solution must be the outcome of a negotiation between the two sides and must be mutually accepted, without arbitration, timeframes or speeding up the process.

Stephanou added that the Russian Foreign Ministry notes that it rejects any attempts to impose timeframes by linking the negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus problem with the assumption of the presidency of the Council of the EU by Cyprus in the second half of 2012.

Moreover, the Spokesman noted that the Russian Foreign Ministry expresses the view that the international conference on the Cyprus problem can only be convened when the internal aspects of the Cyprus problem are solved, as defined in the relevant UN resolutions.

Concluding, Stephanou said that the Russian Foreign Ministry notes that if no solution is found now, the UN Secretary General must continue his good offices mission.
