The UNSG added that if Downer`s assessment is positive, he intends to call an international conference on the Cyprus issue.

During his first press conference of his second term in office, Ban was asked about the two-day meeting which took place this week in New York on the Cyprus issue between himself and the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu.

Ban reiterated that the process is ``Cypriot-led and Cypriot-owned``, saying that he would not speak much about the detailed information of what had been discussed between the two leaders and himself, for confidentiality.

``Confidentiality is a very important element to help this process move. That is what I have been emphasizing to the two leaders please keep confidentiality``, he continued.

As regards the core issues, he said that there has not been any agreement yet

During a working breakfast with British Minister for Europe David Lidington, Markoullis referred to current developments in the Cyprus problem, in the light of a recent meeting in New York between the leaders of the two communities and the UN Secretary General.

Markoullis pointed out the Greek Cypriot side`s determination to reach a just settlement and assured that President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias was participating in talks in a constructive manner, a stance unfortunately not mirrored by the Turkish Cypriot side.

They also exchanged views on Cyprus` EU Presidency during the second half of 2012, with emphasis on enlargement, as well as current developments in the Middle East and the countries of the Arab Spring, and bilateral relations between the United Kingdom and Cyprus.

Markoullis also met with Shadow Minister for Europe Emma Reynolds, with whom she discussed the Cyprus issue, the drilling for hydrocarbons and Cyprus` EU Presidency.

[03] Hydrocarbon discoveries may benefit peace in the region, Minister says

While speaking here this morning, at a conference, organized by the Institute of Energy for South East Europe, on Cyprus energy resources and new developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Minister referred to remarks by Cyprus President Demetris Christofias, saying that energy issues may provide an incentive for reaching a Cyprus solution that will terminate the Turkish occupation of part of the country and reunite the country and its people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

Antoniadou also reiterated the Presidents statement, that Cyprus natural wealth belongs to all Cypriots and that the islands reunification will allow all citizens to benefit from the exploitation of hydrocarbon resources.

She added that it is the responsibility of the leaders from the wider region to utilize these developments in a constructive manner and through interdependence, for the benefit of financial recovery.
