[01] Cyprus talks wrap up, UNSG to issue statement

UN Secretary General Ban Ki moon, Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglou were engaged in talks in the past two days, which are said to have ended without any progress towards a negotiated settlement.

Diplomatic sources have said that in the statement Ban will make on Wednesday, he will probably call on the two sides to continue their efforts in Cyprus, on the same issues, using everything that is on the table and whatever new points the two sides have presented.

It is not certain whether Ban will arrange a new meeting with the two leaders. After their return to Manhattan, the two leaders and their spouses attended a dinner hosted by Ban and his wife.

The two leaders will are set to confer before the official wrap up of the talks and agree on the content of the statement to be issued.

Ban will submit his report on Cyprus to the Security Council in February, with his conclusions about efforts to solve the Cyprus problem during the past 3,5 years, that direct talks are going on between the leaders of the two communities.

Meanwhile earlier Tuesday in statements about the first day of the talks in Greetree, UN Spokesman Martin Nezirski underlined United Nations commitment to help in conciliating this Cypriot led process.

It is indeed unusual for any Secretary-General to devote so much time to one particular topic in a concentrating period. Thats an indication of how important the Secretary-General believes it is to be able to move this process forward. And I would simply encourage you to listen to what the Secretary-General has to say tomorrow morning, by way of an assessment, how those meetings over these two days have been going, he noted.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.

[02] FM pays working visit to London

According to an official press release, the Minister will meet with British Minister of State for Europe David Lidington, as well as with Shadow Minister for Europe, Emma Reynolds.

Moreover, Markoullis will meet with the All Party Parliamentary Group of the House of Commons.

During her stay in London, the Cypriot Foreign Minister will meet members of the UK Committee of the Relatives of Missing Persons.

[03] House President denounces Downers remarks on Cyprus` EU Presidency

I believe a major issue is raised from the reference to Presidency of the Greek Cypriots instead of the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus by Special Adviser of the UN SG in Cyprus Alexander Downer, Omirou says in a written statement, adding this is unacceptable behavior that flagrantly violates all the resolutions of the UN Security Council on Cyprus, the UN Charter, international law rules and the principles and values of the EU.

As President of the House of Representatives that represents and expresses the legislative power of the Republic of Cyprus, I consider it my duty to denounce Downers statements and to underline the UN Secretary Generals responsibilities to secure the objectivity, the impartiality, the credibility of the person he appoints as his representatives in the efforts to solve Cyprus issue, Omirou points out.

[04] ONE in Five Campaign meeting held in Strasbourg

The event was organised by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

During the meeting, parliamentarian and member of the Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development, Stella Kyriakidou, said that unfortunately economic benefits are behind abhorrent crimes of this nature, especially when these are being held through the internet.

She stressed the need to continue monitoring the authorities involved and to maintain an archive of incidents, adding that it is the duty of the state and judiciary to stand by children who become victims of such cases. Kyriakidou further underlined the need to continue training all interested parties and especially the parents, teachers and social workers.

Parliamentarian Athena Kyriakidou, speaking about the measures taken in Cyprus, referred to the last meeting on the issue that was held on the island. She also referred to the National Committee set up, under the auspices of the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, noting that all pledged to take specific measures to implement the aims of the campaign.
