Speaking during an event organized here by the Turkish Democratic Association, President Christofias, who stopped over in London on his way for New York, noted that no real negotiations are taking place with Eroglu, who despite the fact during their first meeting at Greentree had accepted that the talks would continue from the point they were left off with former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat and that the basis of the solution would be the UN resolutions of Cyprus, he reneged.

I have patience, because if I did have any I would have withdrawn from the talks, Christofias noted. He also described Eroglus position on the issues of property, territory, and illegal settlers as intransigent and assured that he will continue until his term in office wraps up his efforts for a settlement for the sake of both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Peace talks are currently underway between President Christofias and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community.

The UN Secretary-General will be meeting with the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities at Greentree, in Long Island on Monday, 23 January and Tuesday, 24 January. The previous such meeting took place on October 30 and 31, again at Greentree estate.

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu are set to meet with UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon from January 22 to 24 at Greentree estate, in Long Island, New York, in the framework of Cyprus reunification efforts.

In his statement, Barroso warmly welcomes the initiative of the UN Secretary General to convene the meeting with the leaders of the two communities in New York.

He adds that the meeting with the Secretary General offers both leaders the opportunity, in this important phase of the negotiation process, to show the necessary political will, vision and determination and use this unique opportunity for reunification in Cyprus.

I share the assessment of the Secretary General that a window of opportunity currently exists and that an agreement is possible, Barroso notes.

[03] Cyprus Institute undertakes project on climate change in Mediterranean

In a statement, the Institute notes that the C8 project aims to improve the understanding of aerosol and cloud processes and their representation in regional and global climate models.

According to the Institutes website, they have developed a new numerical method that consistently computes atmospheric trace gas and aerosol chemistry and can be applied to compute the initial stage of cloud formation. It will allow for a direct coupling in climate models between aerosol chemical composition, being influenced by pollution emissions, and the continuum between hazes and clouds.
