  • [01] House President warns over dangers at Greentree

The meeting at Greentree, Long Island, between the UN Secretary General and the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, bears dangers, President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou said on Thursday.

Speaking at an event in memory of Cyprus` first President, Archbishop Makarios III, Omirou said that there was a danger of ``locking`` the Greek Cypriot side`s concessions, while there would be no respective action for the Turkish Cypriot side, since it has made no concessions.

Omirou said ``we are proceeding to the last lap of Alexander Downer`s plans, the people of Cyprus are oblivious to this fact,`` adding that ``we stand before a painful reality and there can be no illusions that the Turkish beast will be updated with `flexibility` and references to a Cypriot solution.``

He noted that the Cyprus problem is probably at its worst ever, since the commencement of talks for a settlement, adding that the negotiations are at a deadlock due to Turkish intransigence. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

In parallel with HOPERXPO Cyprus, the organizers announced today the opening of the 2nd Cyprus Gift & Souvenir EXPO, focusing on tourist souvenirs, gift items and decoration. The latter will be open for the public.
