A written statement by Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou also said that Christofias informed Papademos about the decision which the National Council took on Monday, in view of the meeting at Greentree.

Stephanou said that on his part, Papademos informed Christofias about the contacts he had with regard to the Cyprus problem.

The National Council - top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem- agreed Monday on the framework President Christofias is to pursue during the meeting of the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus with the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at Greentree, in New York, late January.

According to a statement read out by the Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou following the 3-hour meeting of the National Council, the main issues the Council agreed on is that President Demetris Christofias must not accept any deadlines, arbitration or an international conference unless the two sides agree on the internal aspects of the Cyprus problem.

UN Secretary General has extended a new invitation to the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Eroglu, to meet with him in New York 23-24 January in the framework of the UN backed direct talks for the Cyprus problem.

The first meeting between the two leaders and the UNSG took place in November 2010, followed by two more meetings held in Geneva on January 26 and July 7, 2011, during which both sides reaffirmed their commitment to finding a comprehensive solution as soon as possible, while in Geneva, on 26 January 2011, the sides agreed to intensify the negotiations.

After their October 2011 meeting in New York, the leaders continued the Cyprus talks as usual in the UN protected area in Nicosia.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. Since 1974 Turkey occupies 37% of Cyprus` territory in defiance of UN Security Council resolutions, European Parliament decisions and resolutions, European Council decisions and other resolutions of international fora, which condemn the Turkish invasion and occupation.

[02] Netanyahu to visit Cyprus mid February

An Israeli embassy official in Nicosia told CNA that the purpose of Netanyahu`s visit would be to further strengthen relations between the two countries.

The Prime Minister of Israel will come to Cyprus to emphasize the good relations between the two countries and to strengthen the bilateral relations, which are already good, the official said.

[03] Cyprus annual inflation reaches 4.2% in December 2011

According to Eurostat data the annual inflation rate rose to 4.2% in Cyprus, up from 4% last November.

Euro area annual inflation was 2.7% in December 2011, down from 3% in November, while a year earlier the rate was 2.2%.

EU annual inflation was 3% in December 2011, down from 3.4% in November. A year earlier, the rate was 2.7%.

[04] Cyprus ranks 40th in World Bank report

The results of the report were presented on Tuesday during an event organized in Nicosia by the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency (CIPA).

Addressing the event, CIPA President Christodoulos Agkastiniotis said that the Agency advises the government on reform issues aiming to improve the investment environment,.

According to press release issued here today by CIPA, Agkastiniotis also assured that the Agency is willing to help stakeholders in promoting reforms within its own sphere of competence.

The World Bank`s Doing Business Report measures the ease of doing business in 183 countries, ranking them in 10 areas of business regulation, to determine how conducive they are to starting and operating a local firm in each country.
