  • [01] UN not to disclose content of letter to leaders

The UN Secretary Generals Spokesman Martin Nesirky has said that the UN will not disclose the content of the letters the UNSG has sent last week to the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus.

Asked if the UN will give some key elements of the letter which Ban Ki moon has sent to the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, Nesirky said that they will not make the content of the letters public. He added however as youve heard the Secretary-General saying himself on Friday, there is not a lot of time because July the 1st is when Cyprus will be taking over the Presidency in the European Union and there is a lot to be done.

So I think that if you look back what the Secretary-General said on Friday, he pointed out gives you a good flavor, if you like, of what the letters would have said.

Meanwhile, a UN Secretariat official confirmed that there had been a technical problem that delayed the delivery of UN Secretary General Ban Ki- moons letter to the mission of the Republic of Cyprus at the UN until Saturday. A diplomatic source from Cyprus Permanent Representation at the UN said that the technical problem concerned the UN Secretariat and not the Cypriot side. The same source said that the UNSGs letter was delivered Saturday midday.
