  • [01] Dinner hosted by Cypriot leaders to UN team begins

A dinner hosted by the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, namely President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu to the members of the UN team at the talks for a solution to the Cyprus problem began earlier in the village of Pyla, inhabited by both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

President Christofias arrived at Pyla at 19:05 local time and visited the village`s Community Council building where he was welcomed by newly elected Community Council President Simos Metides and the members of the Council.

Addressing the President and the members of the Community Council, Christofias said that Pyla constitutes an example of cohabitation of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

``Your role is particularly important,`` he said, adding the government strives so that this example would be followed throughout Cyprus through a solution that would reunite the island.

He added that all Cypriot governments have been supporting the mixed village of Pyla, noting that the current government has more reasons to do so.

``You are destined both to cooperate with Turkish Cypriots but also to show the good example for the possibility and the need for joint cohabitation of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots,`` he said.

He also referred to a remark wrongly attributed to him during an interview with Turkish daily ``Hurriyet`` on EOKA, the Cyprus liberation struggle against British colonial rule, noting that he was referring to EOKA B`, a Greek Cypriot paramilitary organisation formed in 1971. He went on to say that the Turkish journalist will correct his error.

On his part, Metides said that the presence of President Christofias at Pyla is an honour as this is the first community the President visits in 2012. He assured that the Community Council will do its utmost to continue the peaceful cohabitation with the Turkish Cypriots.

He also requested the President`s support for development projects in the community.

After the meeting with the Community Council, the President met with Eroglu at the village square and along with their spouses, visited local associations where they were warmly greeted. Later they walked to ``Trohos (Wheel)`` restaurant where dinner is being hosted.

The latest round of UN-led peace talks began in September 2008 in a bid to reach a mutually agreed solution that would reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
