  • [01] Christofias exchanges wishes with Greek PM and President

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has held Monday two separate telephone conversations with his Greek counterpart Karolos Papoulias and Greek Prime Minister Loukas Papademos, with whom he exchanged wishes for the new year.

According to an official press release, during their telephone conversations the two sides reaffirmed the close cooperation which exists between Cyprus and Greece as well as their excellent bilateral relations.

Both Papoulias and Papademos reiterated Greece`s support towards Cyprus and towards President Christofias` efforts to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem that would free Cyprus from the Turkish occupation and would lead to the reunification of the island.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and since then occupy 37% of the islands territory. UN led talks are underway between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus with an aim to reach a solution that would reunify the island under a federal roof. The Republic of Cyprus is an EU member state since 2004.

[02] President: 2012 optimistic but difficult

President Demetris Christofias has said that 2012 will be an optimistic year but at the same time very difficult.

He also said that talks for a Cyprus settlement are not going well, Turkey continues its threats against Cyprus, and the Republic will be holding the EU presidency during the second half of the year.

Addressing a National Guard new year`s event, President Christofias pointed out the importance of the army, adding that the political and military leadership of the island should examine Turkey`s policy and draw strategies that would be able to tackle Turkey`s arrogance and expansionist policy.

«The National Guard is the fighting power of any government of the Republic of Cyprus to help maintain peace and act as a deterrent. If the National Guard did not exist, Turkey would exercise freely its expansionist designs, the President pointed out.

[03] State revenue from companies` special fee more than 19 mln euro

Approximetely 54,538 companies -registered in Cyprus - have until Monday paid the special fee of 350 euro each, which was voted late August by the House of Representatives as part of the government`s first economic package for fiscal consolidation.

He also said that the deadline for the payment of the special fee expires at midnight on Monday.
