  • [01] Hermes Airports: Strike to affect 70 flights

More than fifty thousand passengers and seventy flights to and from the international airports of Cyprus (Larnaka and Paphos) are expected to be affected on Thursday by the 12hour strike of air traffic controllers. In statements on Wednesday, Public Relations and Communications Manager of Hermes Airports Adamos Aspris expressed regret for the discomfort that will be caused to the passengers from the strike, noting however that Hermes Airport is not responsible for this development.

We are waiting to see if the airlines will reschedule their flights after the end of the strike. We, as the authority of the airports, will try to facilitate any action towards that direction, he said. In addition, he called on the passengers to be in contact with their airlines and travel agents in order to be informed about possible changes to their flights.

Finally, Aspris expressed hope all the parties involved will realise the damage to the image of Cyprus, as a tourist destination, and to come to a compromise to avert the strike.

Cyprus Airways announced that 22 flights to and from several destinations in Europe and the Middle East will be affected by the air traffic controllers strike.

[02] Government urges civil servants to reconsider strike

The Government has urged the Civil Servants Union PASIDY to reconsider their decision to proceed with strike action. In remarks on Wednesday, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou referred to the information that new austerity measures will be promoted, pointing out that the measures proposed by the Government are specific and are already before the House of Representatives for discussion and approval.

The Government would like to express its regret and disappointment over the new measures which PASIDY has decided, which, under the circumstances, are extreme, the Spokesman said.

During an extraordinary session earlier Wednesday, PASIDY members decided to hold a four-your work stoppage on Wednesday from 1400 to 1800 local time and will abstain from any overtime work, with the exception of workers at hospitals and airports. The measures were decided as a reaction to new measures expected to be approved by the House of Representatives.

The meeting also decided a 12-hour strike from 0700 to 1900 local time on Thursday and abstention from overtime work, including workers at hospitals and airports. Furthermore, civil servants are called on not to work on December 18, when the local administration elections are set to be held. The meeting also adopted a proposal for the civil servants to hand in the voting books and not vote in the elections.

[03] Government team to examine uncollected dues

A special team will be set up to determine how much of the 1.5 billion euros in delayed state income for 2010 can still be collected and to propose how this can be done.

The setting up of the team was decided during a meeting at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday, under President of the Republic Demetris Christofias.

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said the team, comprising the Minister of Finance, the General Accountant of the state and the Director of the Inland Revenue Department, has undertaken to discuss the whole issue and present suggestions by March 2012.

Replying to questions, Stephanou said that, according to a report by the General Accountant, whose figures match those of the General Auditor, the state is owed 1,548 million euros for 2010, with 66% belonging to the Inland Revenue Department, 15% to the Customs and VAT Department, 8% to the Water Development Department, 3% to the Commission for the Protection of Competition, and lower percentages to the Judicial Service, the Civil Aviation Department, the Medical and Public Health Services, and other departments.
