  • [01] Community leaders continue direct talks

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu will be meeting on Thursday in the UN buffer zone in Nicosia, in the context of UN-led talks to solve the Cyprus problem.

The leaders of the two communities are expected to continue their discussion on governance and power sharing.

In statements to the press after the leaders` last meeting, UN General Secretarys Special Adviser Alexander Downer had said that ``the pattern will be for the leaders to meet more or less every Monday between now and the middle of January``.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The leaders of the two communities are currently engaged in UN-led negotiations with an aim to reunify the island.

[02] FM to meet US Secretary of State

Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis will visit Washington around the end of December for meetings with the US administration. A State Department official has revealed that Marcoullis will meet US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on 20th December and other officials.

Her discussions with Clinton will include bilateral issues and the Cyprus issue, as well as energy concerns and matters that will be undertaken during the Cyprus EU presidency in the second half of 2012. The schedule of her contacts has yet to be finalised, however she is expected to see high ranking officials of the National Security Council and senior Congress officials.

[03] Cyprus disappointed with UNFICYP report

Cyprus appears disappointed by specific references and certain omissions in the UN Secretary-Generals report on the renewal of UNFICYPs mandate, which was unofficially distributed to the members of the Security Council on Wednesday. The Cypriot government is said to have made strong representations for the non-inclusion in the reports introduction of the 186/1964 UN resolution which has been consistently part of the UNSGs reports and today, according to a diplomatic source, a correction is expected.

Representations were also made regarding a reference to the Greek Cypriot side instead of the Republic of Cyprus, which started exploratory drilling for hydrocarbons off the southern coast of the island, in Cyprus exclusive economic zone. Nicosia is also displeased with the absence of a reference to the representations of the Republic over Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayip Erdogans threatening statements.

The first draft of a resolution on UNFICYP will be ready by the end of the week, and it is expected that on Monday the five permanent members of the Security Council will begin their deliberations. The resolution will be adopted either on the 13th or 14th December, while the UN Secretary-Generals Special Representative in Cyprus Lisa Buttenheim is expected in New York to brief the members of the Council on developments.
