  • [01] UN chief`s report on UNFICYP expected soon

Preparations for the UN Secretary General`s report on the peacekeeping mission to Cyprus (UNFICYP) are at their final stage, and the report is expected to be submitted to the Security Council on November 30.

Diplomatic sources told CNA that the Secretariat assures there will be no surprises and that the report will mainly deal with developments concerning the mission, while changes in its structure will be along the same lines.

The Cypriot diplomacy continued its contacts with the Secretariat in Nicosia and at UN headquarters, in order to make sure that the report will be of a technocratic nature.

The report is also expected to include a paragraph on the good offices mission, which, according to diplomatic sources, will be along the lines of the UN chief`s statement after talks at Greentree, New York, with the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus.

The Greek Cypriot side has said that the optimistic hue of the UN Secretary General`s statement, with references to progress at the negotiations, did not reflect the situation.

    [02] Omirou: Turkey continues illegalities

President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou has described Turkey`s intention to proceed with drilling in the so-called exclusive economic zone of the Turkish Cypriots as ``an illegality on top of an illegality,`` adding that Cyprus should report Ankara internationally.

In statements in Larnaca, Omirou said Turkey continues its ``colossal illegality of military occupation of territory belonging to the Republic of Cyprus and now is proceeding a step further in an effort to demand the natural resources of the Republic of Cyprus, in full conflict with international law and all principles and values set by the international and European legal civilisation.``

``Of course there should be a reaction and the immediate and decisive denunciation of Turkey on the UN and EU levels,`` he added.

Referring to Turkish pressure on Lebanon to prevent the Lebanese parliament from ratifying its agreement with Cyprus for the delineation of the two countries` exclusive economic zone, Omirou said there is good will on behalf of Lebanon to overcome all problems.

[03] Cyprus reelected to IMO Council

Cyprus has been reelected to the Council of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for another two-year term.

The reelection during the General Assembly of the IMO, on November 25 in London, is considered very important since Cyprus will continue to contribute actively to drafting policy on international shipping and promote the interests of Cypriot shipping on an international level.

The Cyprus Shipping Chamber, as the official representative of the Cypriot shipping industry, congratulates the Cypriot shipping administration, the Ministry of Communications and Works, and the Commercial Shipping Department for the success.
