[01] PRESIDENT - POLICE NEW DEPUTY CHIEF - AFFIRMATION CEREMONYThe message that the government will work with the Police to create a Force that will inspire trust and respect to the public was conveyed Saturday by President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, at the affirmation ceremony for the new Deputy Chief of Police, Andreas Iatropoulos.The new Deputy Chief said he will work for a more credible and compassionate Police Force. On behalf of the Government, I would like to convey the message that in collaboration with the Police leadership, we are working consciously for a Police that will have high and upgraded aims, President Christofias said. A Police Force, he added, that will act in a way to inspire trust and respect to the people and satisfy public sentiment. That will be credible and willing, capable and effective in its mission, to earn the support and help of all in fulfilling its mission, he added. President Christofias said the government places great priority in upgrading the Police, modernizing it and improving the relations of the Police with the public. He added that the occupation of one third of the islands territory, developments in neighbouring countries and their repercussions on the island, the large tourist flow as well as drugs trafficking and illegal immigration make difficult the efforts to achieve the goal to maintain social peace and order. Despite all these the Police continue to perform an important mission and have substantial successes. He congratulated all officers and members of the Force for their dedication and high sense of responsibility in serving the people and order. The new Police Deputy said his appointment creates additional responsibilities and an obligation to prove worthy of the trust that shown towards him. He assured President Christofias and the Justice Minister that he will work with all his strength, in complete collaboration with the Chief of Police and the Police leadership, to implement the law and order throughout the Republic of Cyprus, without prejudice. [02] KYRENIA BISHOPRIC - ELECTIONSPolls opened Saturday to elect a new Bishop of Kyrenia, following the death of Metropolitan of Kyrenia Pavlos Mantovanis on 2 October.According to the Church, the elections began at 0800 local time and will be completed at 1600 and eligible to vote are those over 18 and who are registered in the Kyrenia district electoral roll. The bishopric is contested by Bishop Mesaorias Gregorios, Archimandrite Chrysostomos Kykotis and Archimandrite Benedict Ioannou. [03] FORMER PRESIDENT - SURGERYFormer President of the Republic, Glafcos Clerides, will undergo surgery Monday after being diagnosed with colon cancer.His physician, Iosif Kasios, in a statement said that after various tests were completed, a malignant tumour was discovered and the former President had to be readmitted in the Evangelistria clinic. The former president, 92, was admitted to Evangelistria on Monday with chronic gastrointestinal disorder but was released two days later as doctors were waiting for test results. After serious thought and evaluation of all facts, it was decided that surgery is the best option for the patient and it will take place Monday, 21 November, a team of doctors who signed the statement added.
