In an official statement, Marcoullis says ``this development is further proof that the LAS has a significant role to play for the stability and peace of the region`` and notes that ``the LAS has to remain present during the whole process, leading to a solution out of the crisis.``

``The Republic of Cyprus reiterates once more its support to the LAS and calls on Syrians to do their utmost to implement the agreement, for the benefit of their country and the whole of the Eastern Mediterranean region and its peoples,`` she concludes.

[02] EU COMMISSIONER - CAMPAIGN AGAINST ILLITERACY

In statements at CNA during a visit at Kykkos B Lyceum in Nicosia Vasiliou said she had appointed a High Level Committee to conduct a study on illiteracy the results of which will be presented at a conference to take place in Cyprus during the Cypriot EU presidency at the 2nd half of 2012.

Illiteracy is one of the main problems Europe is faced with right now, she said, adding that one in five children aged fifteen cannot read well or does not comprehend what he or she is reading.

We must promote the reading of books from a young age, Vassiliou noted.

[03] GREECE CYPRUS BUSINESS

Antoniadou was speaking to the media after an event entitled ``Breakfast with the Minister of Commerce``, organized by the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency (CIPA), in Nicosia, with the participation of the Greek Ambassador to Cyprus Vassilis Papaioannou.

The Minister assured that, if required, the various issues raised during the event will be examined in greater detail. In a respond to a question, she said that the presence of Greek businessmen in Cyprus is significant and is growing``. She also expressed the support of Cyprus to Greece for the difficult times its economy is going through. However, she added, ``the Greek entrepreneurs strengthen their presence in Cyprus.

The Greek Ambassador to Cyprus Vassilis Papaioannou described the meeting as ``very productive,`` noting that it focused on seeking opportunities to improve and further develop our bilateral cooperation both in the investment sector and the commercial and financial sector``.
