    Cyprus Acting President, House President Yiannakis Omirou has said that he will wait to be informed about the outcome of the talks on the Cyprus problem held in New York during the last two days, before expressing his position.

    UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu and their aides met on Sunday and Monday at Greentree Estate, in Manhasset, New York on Long Island and discussed the four core issues of the Cyprus problem, namely governance, property, territory and citizenship.

    It is proper if we want to behave seriously and responsibly first to be informed about the negotiations in New York and then express any official position, Omirou noted.

    He noted that we are waiting for the UN Secretary Generals statement about the results of the New York meeting, during which procedural and other surprises came up.

    Replying to a question whether he is afraid that of a possible agreement at the talks on some of the positions of the Greek Cypriot side, which his party, the Social Democrats movement EDEK, has described as unacceptable, Omirou said that there were various opportunities during the negotiations for the Greek Cypriots side to withdraw these positions. He also said that these positions will not be accepted by the people, as the rotating presidency and the weighted voting system, ``which violate democratic principles relating to the fundamental democracy rule, which is the majority principle.

    [02] APOEL VICTORY CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

    Cyprus Champions APOEL Nicosia beat former European Cup winners Porto 2-1 at home and for the first time in the eastern Mediterranean island`s football history a Cypriot club are close to a place in the Champions League last 16.

    APOELs striker Ailton opened the score three minutes before the end of the first half through a penalty kick.

    Hulk equalised for Porto one minute before the end again through a penalty kick.

    APOEL doubled their goals in the last minute through Gustavo Manduca.

    The first match between the two teams in Portugal had ended 1-1.

    Zenit St. Petersburg won earlier 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk.

    APOEL lead Group G with 8 points followed by Zenit with 7 points. Porto are in the third place with 4 points and Shakhtar with 2 points.
