[01] CYPRUS ISSUE - PRESIDENT - NEW YORK MEETINGCyprus President Demetris Christofias departs for New York, via London, where he will have a two-day intensive meeting, on Sunday and Monday, with the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu.During the meeting, the UN Secretary-General is expected to review progress reached in all core issues, that were discussed in the framework of intensive direct talks for a Cyprus solution, and decide on the way forward. The meeting will start on Sunday, at the Green Tree mansion, in Long Island, while the Secretary-General will make statements to the press on Monday evening, upon its conclusion. Moreover, the UN Secretary-General Special Advisor for Cyprus Alexander Downer is scheduled to talk to the press on Sunday, at 18.15 local time, on the result of the first days meeting. This will be the forth meeting with the Secretary-General. The first took place in November 2010, followed by two more meetings held in Geneva on January 26 and July 7, 2011, during which both sides reaffirmed their commitment to finding a comprehensive solution as soon as possible, while in Geneva, on 26 January 2011, the sides agreed to intensify the negotiations. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. [02] PRESIDENT - GREEK NATIONAL DAYThe ideals and values of the fight of the Greek people against subjugation continue to guide the people of Cyprus in their fight to end Turkish occupation and reunify the island, Cyprus President Demetris Christofias says in a letter to his Greek counterpart Karolos Papoulias.On the occasion of the Greek National Day, President Christofias congratulates the President of the Hellenic Republic, the political leadership and the people of Greece, saying that on October 28, 1940, the Greek people fought for dignity, freedom and justice. In a separate letter to Greek Primer Minister George Papandreou, President Christofias expresses his gratitude for Greeces continuous support to the struggle of Cyprus. [03] EDUCATION MINISTER - UNESCOMinister of Education and Culture Giorgos Demosthenous heading a Cypriot delegation, participated in the Plenary of the 36th General Assembly of UNESCO held in Paris October 25 to November 10, 2011.According to an official press release, Demosthenous in a speech referred extensively to the efforts made by the Cyprus Republic to promote the goals of UNESCO since 1961. He underlined that Cyprus EU Presidency in the second half of 2012 will be a challenge to further promote cultural dialogue, social cohesion and differences, which are important elements for building peace. Demosthenous said that Cyprus shares the vision of UNESCO concerning the core role of education as means of social, economic development. [04] MARITIME CYPRUS 2011 - CSC DIRECTOR - INTERVIEWThe 2011 edition of Maritime Cyprus Conference was the best ever held in terms of content and structure, Director General of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber Thomas Kazakos told CNA.Following its intriguing title ``The ?s in Shipping,`` the Conference, which is considered one of the top three of its kind in the world along with Japan and Norway, tackled the three questions which currently are touching the core of global shipping. Is shipping safe enough, is it sustainable and is there enough confidence. These questions, due to piracy, environmental concerns and the current economic downturn preoccupy global maritime analysts today. Therefore, according to Kazakos, Cyprus as one of the global players in international shipping, having the tenth largest commercial fleet in the world and the third in the EU, could not ignore dealing with these three fundamental questions facing the international shipping industry.
