  • [01] LEADERS CYPRUS TALKS

The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, hold today a new meeting in the framework of the UN-led talks, aiming at reaching a solution that would reunite the country, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

The meeting takes place in the residence of UNSGs Special Representative in Cyprus Liza Buttenheim, in the United Nations Protected Area of Nicosia.

The two leaders will meet again Friday before departing to New York, where they will meet with UN Secretary General Ban Ki moon, at the end of October.

In statements after their previous meeting which was held on Friday 14th of October, UN Secretary Generals Special Adviser on the Cyprus issue Alexander Downer said that the two leaders discussed a large number of issues from the economy, the European Union to internal security.

They had, he noted, a lengthy discussion about the property issue and they also talked about territory and governance and power sharing, adding that there was a particular emphasis in the discussion on property and governance and power sharing.

Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. UN led talks have been ongoing since 2008 between the two leaders with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof.

The meeting of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon with the leaders of the two communities in New York will probably take place on October 30 and 31. It will be the forth meeting with the Secretary-General. The first took place in November 2010, followed by two more meetings held in Geneva on 26 January and 7 July 2011, during which both sides reaffirmed their commitment to finding a comprehensive solution as soon as possible, while in Geneva, on 26 January 2011, the sides agreed to intensify the negotiations.

During their previous meeting on July 7th, 2011, the leaders had agreed to enter into an intensive period of negotiations on the core issues of Cyprus problem.

    [02] UN MEETING LEADERS

The United Nations are planning a two-day meeting in New York between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus and the UN Secretary General, according to reliable sources.

The meeting between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias, the Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu and the UNSG Ban Ki moon is set to take place on 30-31 October.

The same sources have said that during Monday`s telephone conversation with UN the Secretary General, the Cypriot President discussed with him the meeting as well as the course of the UN - led peace talks.

According to these sources, the two men had an extensive discussion during which President Christofias briefed the SG on the state of play of the talks, saying that, on the basis of the goal set out in Januarys meeting with Ban and Eroglu in Geneva - to achieve more convergences on substantive issues - this does not seem to have been achieved because the Turkish side has reneged on core issues.
