  • [01] NATIONAL COUNCIL - MEETING

The National Council, the top advisory body to the President of the Republic on the handling of the Cyprus problem, will convene on Friday.

President Demetris Christofias has convened the meeting to discuss developments in the Cyprus issue.

The meeting will take place ahead of the forthcoming meeting of President Christofias with UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Dervis Eroglu, in New York, at the end of October.

    [02] USA - RUBIN - VISITS

Eric Rubin, Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs at the US State Department, will visit Athens and Cyprus from 17-21 October.

A State Department official said the talks with the Greek and Cypriot leadership will concern a wide aspect of bilateral and regional issues.

Rubin has visited Turkey on a recent trip, it was further clarified.

He undertook office in July, replacing Tina Kaidanow.

    [03] DANIELIDES - PERSONAL DATA

Personal data and private life, in the modern era of computing and internet, are more exposed than ever before. Simple daily habits such as shopping online, social networking, visiting places where closed circuit television systems operate (CCTV) and operating filing systems can lead to excessive disclosure of personal data, even unbeknown to us.

The office of the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection in Cyprus was established in 2001 to deal with the protection of personal information against unauthorized and illegal collection, in addition to recording date and using further. The Office grants the individual certain rights, including the right to information, and gives them the possibility to submit to the Office complaints relating to the application of the Law.

On September 27, Yiannos Danielides was appointed as the new Commissioner. In an interview with CNA, Danielides acknowledged that there is a need to make the public more aware of the Commissioners role in Cyprus. He explains the risk that we run regarding the protection of personal data when accessing the internet and social networking websites. Danielides analyses some of the most important problems his Office has to deal with.

Asked about his plans, the Commissioner says that in due time he will try to see where the Office has got to and what needs to be done regarding peoples perception of the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection. I truly believe that we are lagging behind. People do not know what exactly is the role of the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection, he remarks.

Fortunately, he adds, we have a very well-staffed office. The staff is remarkable and works very hard. Every day I deal with various cases and take the appropriate decisions in consultation with the administrative personnel of the Commissioners office.

    [04] NIKIFOROS - CANCELLED

The Republic of Cyprus has decided to cancel ``Nikiforos - 2011`` military exercise, expecting Turkey to follow suit and cancel its military exercise ``Taurus``.

An official press release, issued here today, said that the Republic had proposed to the UN the cancellation of both ``Nikoforos`` exercise as well as of the Turkish military exercise ``Taurus.``

It is added that despite the fact that Turkey has not replied to the proposal of the Republic of Cyprus, the latter has decided, in view of the negotiations on the Cyprus problem and the need to maintain calmness and normality in the region without tension, that the exercise will not take place.

``The Republic of Cyprus expects Turkey to respond to its proposal,`` the press release concluded.
