  • [01] NOBLE ENERGY - DRILLING - EEZ

American company Noble Energy began Sunday night drilling in block 12 in Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), to explore and exploit the countrys sub-sea natural resources, Director of Energy Service at the Ministry of Commerce Solon Kassinis confirmed to CNA Monday.

Kassinis said that drilling takes place on a 24-hour basis and so far things are proceeding well.

Cyprus has signed an agreement to delineate the Exclusive Economic Zone with Egypt and Israel with a view to exploit any possible natural gas and oil reserves in its EEZ. A similar agreement was signed with Lebanon but the Lebanese Parliament has not yet ratified it.

Turkey, which occupies Cyprus northern part since it invaded in 1974, has threatened it would deploy warships in the Eastern Mediterranean, if drilling takes places prior to a political settlement in Cyprus.

Houston-based company Noble Energy has a drilling rig off Cyprus` southern coast. The company has a concession to explore for hydrocarbons in an offshore field in Cyprus` EEZ, south of Cyprus, known as Block 12.

    [02] GREECE - CYPRUS - EEZ

Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Stavros Lambrinides has assured that Greece would stand by Cyprus in case Turkey decided to attack, due to the launching of explorations for hydrocarbons in Cyprus` exclusive economic zone.

Lambrinides noted that the Eastern Mediterranean does not need a ``gendarme``, especially one who, instead of implementing international law, is the first to violate it.

In an interview with a Greek newspaper, Lambrinides said ``solidarity among partners, in case of an attack against one of them, emanates from the Lisbon Treaty as well.``

``The artificial exacerbation of the debate, each time Turkey unleashes rhetorical threats, is wrong. Turkey is pursuing to militarise the discussion because it has not arguments,`` he pointed out.

Regarding Turkey`s explorations around Greece, Lambrinides said ``we will do everything necessary to fully defend our sovereign rights.``

    [03] CYPRUS - UEFA MEETINGS

According to UEFA, the main points on the agenda are an update on the strategy meeting with presidents and general secretaries of UEFA member associations, an update on UEFA EURO 2012 and the new membership of the UEFA Convention on Referee Education and Organisation.
