  • [01] UN CHIEF - GREEK MINISTER - CYPRUS ISSUE

UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon will be meeting with President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu in October, and believes that the latest developments do not contribute to creating the climate conductive to a Cyprus settlement.

The UN chief met on Sunday in New York with Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Stavros Lambrinides, who stated after the meeting that they discussed Turkey`s threats against Cyprus regarding explorations for hydrocarbons in Cyprus` exclusive economic zone.

They also discussed relations between Greece and Turkey, the Middle East question, the financial crisis, and differences between Greece and FYROM.

Lambrinides said they discussed concerns regarding the instability created by the developments, and that had the opportunity to brief the UN Secretary General on the latest Turkish threats against Cyprus and its rights to exploit the deposits in its exclusive economic zone.

He added that they also discussed Turkey`s intention to launch explorations in an area adjacent to a Greek shelf.

``The Secretary General expressed concern over the phenomena that cause instability and which could also hinder the very important discussions on the Cyprus problem,`` Lambrinides said.

To questions regarding Turkish moves in the area, Lambrinides said Greece has established its sovereign rights internationally and that it was wrong to militarise the discussion just because Turkey wishes to do so.

``Turkey has no arguments and that is why it usually resorts to tension,`` Lambrinides pointed out.

    [02] BLOCK 12 - PERSONNEL

Noble Energy personnel were taken by helicopter to the platform on Block 12 on Monday, where drilling for hydrocarbons is set to start.

The helicopter, used by Noble Energy to transport personnel, took off from the helicopter pad at the new port of Limassol.

Houston-based company Noble Energy has a concession to explore for hydrocarbons in an offshore field in Cyprus` EEZ, south of Cyprus, known as Block 12.

    [03] GREECE - CYPRUS - EEZ

Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Stavros Lambrinides assured on Sunday that Greece would stand by Cyprus in case Turkey decided to attack, due to the launching of explorations for hydrocarbons in Cyprus` exclusive economic zone.

Lambrinides noted that the Eastern Mediterranean does not need a ``gendarme``, especially one who, instead of implementing international law, is the first to violate it.

In an interview with a Greek newspaper, Lambrinides said ``solidarity among partners, in case of an attack against one of them, emanates from the Lisbon Treaty as well.``

``The artificial exacerbation of the debate, each time Turkey unleashes rhetorical threats, is wrong. Turkey is pursuing to militarise the discussion because it has not arguments,`` he pointed out.

Regarding Turkey`s explorations around Greece, Lambrinides said ``we will do everything necessary to fully defend our sovereign rights.``

Asked if Turkey`s actions, harsh remarks and threats were a bluff, Lambrinides said ``threatening with violence is simply illegal and unacceptable,`` adding that ``whether it is a bluff or not, it creates a climate of tension and increases the odds for bad calculations and unpredictable situations.``

    [04] CYPRUS - UEFA MEETINGS

The UEFA Executive Committee will meet in Limassol on September 22 and 23. According to UEFA, the main points on the agenda are an update on the strategy meeting with presidents and general secretaries of UEFA member associations, an update on UEFA EURO 2012 and the new membership of the UEFA Convention on Referee Education and Organisation.

The UEFA Executive Committee will be chaired by UEFA President Michel Platini. Meetings will be held during the afternoon of Thursday September 22 and the morning of Friday September 23. A media conference will follow on September 23.

Meanwhile, a UEFA conference will take place on September 20-21 in Limassol to discuss the future of football. It will be attended by 53 national associations, who are members of UEFA.

According to Cyprus Football Association website, UEFA will hold a broad debate during the conference on all major topics concerning football. All Presidents and Secretary Generals of the 53 national associations will take part in the debate, along with top UEFA officials, in an effort to probe positions and take decisions at a later stage, through the Unions Executive Committee or the Assembly. The conference will be divided in study groups and their decisions will be evaluated, in order for UEFA to take final decisions on the topics under discussion.
