  • [01] HOUSE PRESIDENT TURKEY - THREATS

The Republic of Cyprus will not be deterred by Turkeys unacceptable and unlawful threats, Acting President of the Republic and House President Yiannakis Omirou has said.

Omirou, who was commenting on Turkish threats against forthcoming oil exploration in Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone, called on those interested in security and stability in the region to turn decisively towards Turkey and make it clear that Ankara cannot continue to behave in a way that violates the international law.

He also invited them to urge Turkey to comply with international law and order. In particular, he added, the EU must make clear to Turkey that if it continues to question the Law of the Sea Convention, which the EU has ratified, this will lead to the termination of its course to join the EU.

Speaking during a memorial service for army officers killed during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, Omirou said that Turkish efforts to create tension in the Eastern Mediterranean have escalated in the past few weeks.

    [02] DEFMIN TURKEY CYPRUS ISSUE

Defence Minister Demetris Eliades has called on Turkey to cooperate for a political settlement in Cyprus to render the country an island of freedom, peace and cooperation where all legitimate citizens can live in safety and peace, enjoying the wealth of their homeland.

Eliades told a local radio station that during talks he had with Greek National Defence Minister Panos Beglitis they discussed issues of mutual interest in the framework of their permanent cooperation and coordination.

The Minister said that relations between Greece and Cyprus are excellent and that the Greek government firmly supports the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of the Republic of Cyprus.

He stressed that we are not going to get engaged in the game of threats and provocations played by Ankara, adding that Cyprus and Greece pursue normal relations in the region and are working for stability with seriousness, responsibility and compliance with international law.
